I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains was commissioned by the Northern California Band Directors' Association to honour their 50th Anniversary in 2012. The first performance was given by the Association’s 2012 Honor Band, conducted by Dr Royce Trevis, in the Harlen Adams Theater, California State University, Chico, California, on 4th February that year. The brief for the commission asked for a piece that celebrated the United States’ natural resources and composer Philip Sparke turned to Katharine Lee Bates’s lyrics for the song America the Beautiful, of which the first and last verses are:O beautiful for spacious skies,For amber waves of grain,For purplemountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining seaThe three movements each take their title from these verses:1. O Beautiful for Spacious Skies: Opening with filigree woodwind figuring, this movement aims to recreate the light and lightness of a spring sky, birds and blossoms floating on gentle breezes.2. From Sea to Shining Sea: A vivacious celebration of water bubbling in streams, rivers and lakes.3. America! America! Der Komponist Philip Sparke wählte daher die erste und letzte Strophe aus Katherine Lee Bates’ Text zum Lied America the Beautiful, die da lauten:O beautiful for spaciousskies,For amber waves of grain,For purple mountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining seaDie Titel der drei Sätze stammen alle aus diesen Strophen:1. This short but solemn overture was written on the occasion of the 110th jubilee of Harmonie Hautcharage, Luxembourg. It is an homage to Jean-Paul Frisch and his son Gérard (the present conductor), who each have been conducting theensemble for many years. Under their leadership, the band has developed and improved remarkably. The very first musical theme, presented during the introduction of this little overture, is based on the letters hidden in the namesJean-Paul and Gérard Frisch (in which h is considered b as it is in German), thus aiming the spotlight on both key figures in the history of Harmonie Hautcharage. After the rather stately intro, the allegro is more joyful andlighthearted, thus depicting the optimism of the many young players of the band. The end is exciting and energetic: it radiates positivity and belief in the future.

This overture, called Sinfonia, is without doubt one of the best original works for concert band to emerge from the 19th century. It is characterised by its fluid spontaneity as well as its rich texture. This arrangement off ers bands the opportunity to perform a work of high artistic value, which otherwise would be forgotten.

This work for soprano and concert band was originally written for a special occasion: the wedding of one of the composer’s children. It therefore matches another piece written for a similar occasion “I Shall Love But Theeâ€. The lyrics are from the book Respiro Neve by the internationally renowned art photographer Luca Artioli who possesses poetic talent as well. The first movement is stately and serene as where the contrasting allegro is much more dynamic and cheerful, requiring the solid high register of the singer. The conclusion is festive and radiant, partly thanks to the contribution of a piccolo trumpet! This work is a wonderful addition to the bandrepertoire wanting to perform with an excellent vocal soloist! I Shall Love But Thee. I Shall Love But Thee.

This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composers own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of theEnglish city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases forseveral instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an ad libitum organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad andgrand. Concerto for Trombone was written especially for Jörgen van Rijen, the solo trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. It is a composition without a story, consisting of four overlapping parts. The solo part was not written for Jörgen van Rijen technical skills, but rather for his expressive technique in the higher registers. According to Jan Bosveld, Jörgen van Rijen has additional merits that distinguish him from all other trombonists. Concerto for Trombone was premiered at the International Music Festival in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. The Repräsentations Orchester des Schweizer Armeespiel, conducted by Christopher Walter, accompanied him. This composition was made financially possible by the Music Lending and Information Centre (MUI), department of the library for the province of Gelderland in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Special thanks goes to mr. Bert Aalders, director of the MUI. Christoph Walter. In this four-movement suite, every moment sings of a different type of French wine. All these wines have their origins in the little French village of Savigny-les-Beaune in Burgundy and are made by wine-grower Pierre Guillemot. It was theexcellent quality of the wines that inspired Rob Goorhuis into writing this composition. The first three movements deal with three red wines made of the Pinot Noir grape which all bear the Premier Cru designation. The final movement wasinspired by a white wine made of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. In the nature of their musical material, the various movements not only give a characterisation of the taste of the wines. they also hint at impressions of the respective vineyards andtheir surroundings. 1st Movement Les Narbantons - Giocoso 2nd Movement Les Jarrons - Gracioso 3rd Movement Les Serpentieres - Festivo 4rd Movement Dessus des Golardes - Vivaci.
