The rich heritage of French-Canadian folk music dates back several centuries. Robert has chosen three of these songs to create a musical portrait of this colorful culture. The opening piece is the jaunty and dance-like Monsieur Lecure, followed by the hauntingly beautiful Blanche Comme la Neige. The piece concludes with the spirited march Vive la Canadienne!, which features a drum break and builds to an exciting, rousing finish. The creative use of harmonizations, key changes and dynamic contrasts gives this piece a sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced piece. Dur: 3:35.

The melodies, harmonies, moods and rhythms of Norwegian folk songs and dance (even the sounds of Norwegian folk instruments) permeate the music of Edvard Grieg (1843-1907). After studying in Leipzig and Copenhagen he returned to Norway and a chance meeting with Norwegian nationalist Rikard Nordraak ignited his interest in folk music and laid the foundation for his compositional style. His most famous orchestral works are the Piano Concerto (1868) and the incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt (1875). He wrote many collections of folk music for piano and these two tunes come from his 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances, op. 17.1.Cow Keeper's Song 2.Wedding March. Zu seinen berühmtesten Orchesterwerken zählen das Piano Concerto (1868) und die Vertonung von Ibsens Peer Gynt (1875). Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem tancolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas' mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is based on the tune Suiryo-Bushi, which comes from the shamisen tradition and opens with two contrasting statements of the melody followed by several variations each in an own style based uponthe same tune, or sometimes only fragments of it. In one of the variants, the pentatonic scale is used. The final section is in the form of a scherzo, which eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune.Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is gebaseerd op het liedje Suiryo-Bushi, dat afkomstig is uit de shamisen-traditie en opent met twee contrasterende statements van de betreffende melodie, gevolgd door verschillende variatieshierop, in diverse stijlen, steeds gebaseerd op hetzelfde liedje of fragmenten eruit. The Yiddish word ‘Klezmer’ has been derived from the Old Hebrew words ‘Kley’ (tool, instrument) and ‘Zemer’ (song, singing, making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music, Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. ‘Klezmer Discovery’ is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe. The introduction consists of anumber of motives from different traditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L’cha Dodi), followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel’s Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently, ‘Der Terk in Amerika’, a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast, cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of ‘Klezmer Discovery’ (Lebedyk un Freylekh, Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele). The Irish folk tune Slane (the melody used in the hymn Be Thou My Vision) forms the foundation for this melodically expansive and inspired work for concert band. A flowing exploration of the melody in variation inspires the listener with its bold and thrilling progression. The piece remains within reach of a solid grade 3 band but gives the impression of a higher level of composition. A rich variety of style and orchestration make this a good choice for festival use as well as concert performance, as well as a great opportunity to study the rich cultural heritage of Ireland. You'll be glad you programmed Variants on an Irish Folk Tune by Timothy Johnson.

“Slane,” an Irish folk song that appears towards the end of Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune, is a hymn tune version of the much older folk melody “The Banks of the Bann.” In this composition, fragments of this melody are introduced, hinting at what is to come later in the piece, but another folk-like tune is predominant. This theme later acts as a descant to “Slane” when it finally appears. Add a little Sparke sparkle to any concert with this lovely interlude. Duration: 4:00.

2008 marked the 400th anniversary of the 1608 founding of Quebec City in Canada. The Band of Les Voltigeurs de Quebec, an infantry regiment of the Canadian forces, commissioned this piece as part of the anniversary celebrations. The folk songs of Quebec share, for obvious reasons, a history with the folk songs of France, but many can also claim to originate in Canada. All three movements of this suite use different settings of the evocative “La'-haut sur ces montagnes” as an introduction, and are then based on two popular folk songs. The first movement uses “Veillée rustique” and “Petit Jean,” the second uses “À la claire fontaine” and “Vive les matelots,” and the third is based on “C'est l'aviron” and “Au cabaret.&rdquo.

The melodies in Songs of the West differ in styles, keys, and tempos. The nautical nature of the coastal region is evident in many of the melodies. Gustav Holst did not have much success in getting his early compositions published. In 1905, he began a career as a gifted teacher when he was appointed Director of Music at St. Paul's Girls School in Hammersmith. It was also a time when he developed the friendship of Ralph Vaughan Williams and the two developed an interest in English folk music. This became a turning point in Holst's style as he left behind the heaviness of the Wagnerian style for the simplicity of folk melodies. Vaughan Williams wrote 'we were dazzled, we wanted to preach a new gospel, we wanted to rhapsodise on these tunes just as Liszt and Grieg had done on theirs - we simply were fascinated by the tunes.' Enthusiastic archivist Cecil Sharp, of the Folk Song Society, encouraged Holst to write 'Two Selections of Folk Songs' based on material Sharp had collected in the West of England. Songs of the West was the first of the pair noted as Opus 22 was written in 1906; A Somerset Rhapsody was completed the following year. The melodies in Songs of the West differ in styles, keys, and tempos. The nautical nature of the coastal region is evident in many of the melodies. Originally written for orchestra, noted composer James Curnow was commissioned in 1986 to arrange the work for concert band.

Inspiring popular music from the Ukraine. Perhaps one would only expect original folk-music to come out of this part of Europe but nothing could be further from the truth. By the Way is a delightfully swinging little piece which allows you to pull out all stops: a very welcome addition to the popular genre indeed. Your musicians will have great fun in performing this little piece.
