You won't find another piece of music more fitting of its title! Relentless is an intense, aggressive, wild ride of a piece that maintains energy and excitement throughout - even through the silences! Structured in sonata form, the music incorporates sparkling use of unusual orchestration, such as aleatoric whistling passage for the brass, and passages where the clarinetists play through their mouthpiece and barrel only. This is a surefire winner!

Resignation was composed in memory of one of Ed Kiefer's best friends. Evoking the struggle of coming to grips with the loss of a dear friend, the piece is based on the hymn, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. It is dramatic, heartfelt, and overwhelmingly beautiful. As Hans Christian Andersen once said, When words fail, music speaks..Dr. David S. Neither could I write a piece that could come close to reflecting his kind spirit, wit, personality or talent. In fact, it was almost impossible for me to write anything at all. My own grief and the stages of my grief kept getting in the way. I ended up with a setting of the hymn-tune, Resignation. Resigned. To the fact that he is no longer with us. I know he is in a better place, but we are not. We miss him very much. And so, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need seems to speak to those of us he left behind. I apologize if this piece does not reflect your special feelings for him or help you celebrate his moving on. Unfortunately, I could only put down what I have come to accept and hope in some way it may speak to any of you that knew him or to others of you who have also lost a close friend. My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. That is my hope and my hope for you.Although technically very easy, this composition requires a maturity of musicianship to be performed properly. The Bb contrabass clarinet part is integral to the composition, but there are cues in the tuba part if you need them.  Make sure you bring horns to the fore at m. 53 and the low brass at m. 59 so the melody can be heard without effort. Exaggerate dynamics to bring more emotion to the piece. Be careful not to diminuendo too soon near the end or it will be difficult to diminish even further at the very end, where the lone clarinetist holds over a couple of measures, fading into nothing. I hope your students will enjoy this piece and take from it a greater appreciation for the way making music can express feelings.

George Gershwin used elements of classical music and jazz in this well known and loved work. The premiere of this piece was in Aeolian Hall in New York on February 12, 1924. Paul Whiteman led his big band, which was augmented with a string section, with the composer himself playing the piano solo. Gershwin improvised quite a lot during the concert as much of the music was yet to be written down on paper. The famous clarinet glissando in the opening was actually a joke from the clarinetist in the band, which Gershwin later wrote into the score.

Clarinets to the Fore keeps the promise of its own title: the entire clarinet section of your band is put into the spotlight. The two virtuoso outer sections of this entertaining work are separated by a blues-style middle section. Here's Harm Evers in top form! Harm Evers in Hochform! Intermezzo is the second movement of Satoshi Yagisawa’s Clarinet Concerto. Lightning Fingers showcases the musical and technical virtuosity of the solo clarinetist in this original work by legendary bandmaster and composer Henry Fillmore. It is a happy, showy display piece which has been enjoyed by generations of performers and audiences alike. The solo was written for Louise Reztke, who Fillmore referred to as the “Phantom Clarinetist.†Reztke was the soloist for Fillmore's own band and was featured many times on their radio broadcasts. Robert Foster's new edition cleans up some inconsistencies present in older editions and makes it accessible to a new generation of band musicians.

Published in 1962, this adaptation of the exciting classic takes full advantage of modern symphonic band instrumentation to achieve an artistic performance of the solo with band accompaniment. Beautifully arranged by Alfred Reed, each set includes detailed notes for the conductor and a superb Master Lesson by clarinetist Don McCathren (Duquesne University) to aid soloists in their preparation of the piece. Abundant cross-cues are also provided in the band parts to ensure that exposed bassoon, alto/bass clarinet and F horn passages are clearly heard. Duration 9:00.

Reflections is a musical portrayal of the people and moments in our lives which shape and change us. Musical elements from various sources are woven into a rich tapestry of sounds and colors that show the full expressive range of the band. Perfect for contest and festivals! Reflections by Robert Langenfeld, was commissioned by a consortium (alumni/friends/family/UCM Bands/ CTS Pubs) for Dr. Russell Coleman in celebration of his 90th birthday and his service as director of bands at the University of Central Missouri (CMSU) for 32 years. Langenfeld was given guidelines for the composition which included a clarinet soli (Coleman is a clarinetist), excerpts from Dance Prelude (commissioned by Dr. Coleman and the UCM Phi Mu Alpha chapter, written by Claude T. Smith for the CMSU (UCM) Band in 1978), the UCM Alma Mater and the UCM fight song, Go Mules. This work was premiered on June 17, 2018 by the Warrensburg Community Band, under guest conductor, Dr. Anthony Pursell, at the 2018 Missouri Bandmasters Association Summer Convention at Tan-Tar-A in Osage Beach, MO. Dr. Russell Coleman has been the conductor for the Warrensburg Community Band since 1985.
