The second half of the 18th century, for the people of East Central Europe, was the time of the awakening of national consciousness. The leading force in the Hungarian enlightenment, the lesser nobility, also regarded as important the national character of the country's culture. A valuable kind of national music was the Hungarian dance music that flourished in the 18th century. The greater part of the repertoire naturally perpetuates the 'Hungarian-style' pieces from the previous centuries (appearing in foreign collections too described as hungaricus, ungaresca, saltus hungaricus or Ungarischer Tanz), but beside these we can encounter contemporary European dances and entertaining instrumental pieces in almost every style. The majority of the sources are collections compiled by non-professional musicians and intendedfor private music-making. In this work the composer uses melodies from the 18th-century Linus dance collection, in trioform, with harmonies and bass appropriate to that period. The musical fabric is rich in counterparts, the sound is mademore colourful with many kinds of percussion instruments. The register and rhythmic simplicity of the parts make thepieces easily playable even by music school pupils.picc, 8 fl, 2 ob, 2 fg, 4 cl1 Bb, 4 cl2 Bb, 4 cl3 Bb, 2 cl b Bb, sax a1 Eb, sax a2 Eb, 2 sax t Bb, sax bar Eb - 4 tr1 Bb, 4 tr2 Bb, 4 cor, 4 trb, 2 flic t Bb/C, 4 tb - timp, 4 perc (glsp, xyl, 5 t bl, 2 bongos, cast, ptto sosp, cow bell, trgl, gr c, tamb b).

The composer wrote of his work as follows: In the music of Hungary, folk songs are manifestly of great importance, on the other hand our ancient airs and dances play a modest role. For this work I have been influenced by dances of the 17th century, written by unknown amateurs in a relatively simple style. Most of these dances were recorded between the 14th and 18th centuries under the usual form of tablature notation. My interest in this music was first captured in the 1940s. I was so fascinated that I decided to give these melodies new life. I fitted the little eight-bar dances together into ternary and rondo forms, and leaning on early Baroque harmony and counterpoint, I attempted a reminiscence of that atmosphere of the provincial Hungarian Baroque.

The Shakers were a sect who, in the 18th Century, sailed out from England to America. Right into the late 19th Century, the numerous songs of this community were handed down orally, until they were written down in various volumes of song collections. Philip Sparke’s fantasy for wind band is based on a selection of these beautiful, captivatingly simple songs. Commissioned by the Association for Music in International Schools, Albion Heritage is a folk song fantasy based on tunes from various parts of the British Isles. It opens with Brighton Camp (an English version of The Girl I Left Behind Me), which is treated to a variety of twists and turns. The slower section is based on the Scottish tune O Waly Waly (also known as The Water Is Wide), which dates from the early 18th century. This is followed by a robust setting of Men of Harlech, which is said to describe the repeated sieges of Harlech Castle in the 15th century.

Großer Gott, wir loben dich is a well-known German hymn, written by Ignaz Franz in the 18th century but based on the 4th century Te Deum laudamus. After a radiant introduction by the brass section, the first variation on the chorale appears. Subsequently, the song is rendered in its original form. Then three more variations follow. The result is a solemn work that is very fitting within the context of a church service, but is also suitable for many other occasions. This piece comprises a series of variations on the melody of “Ami, dans cette vie†(“Friend, in this lifeâ€), an 18th century French song. Like the famous poem “Canzona de Bacco†by Lorenzo de' Medici, this song invites the listener to enjoy life, friendships, love and wine while there is still time to do so. The epicurean nature of this text contrasts with a deeply melancholic melody, a contradiction which is explored in the present work. After a somewhat turbulent first part, the original melody is revealed in a serene and pensive middle section which highlights several soloists. In the last movement, the atmosphere is transformed to become increasingly exuberant, like a Bacchus incantation. The piece concludes with a final dazzling statement of the original theme. Canzona di Bacco was commissioned by the Vesoul Municipal Wind Band, who premiered the work on 24 June 2022 at the Edwige Feuillère Theatre in Vesoul (France), under the direction of Mathieu Anguenot.

Ãrpád Balázs (*1937) composed the first version of the work between 1994 and 1996 for tárogató and concert band. Since this traditional Hungarian instrument is rarely found in ensembles abroad, a soprano saxophone can serve as an alternative solo instrument. The composer uses melodies from the early 18th century, from the age of Rákóczi's war of independence. An ambitious framework is given to the work by the reminiscing, solemnly flowing brass chorus, which is built of the motives of the folk song Oh,Rákóczi, Bercsényi (Hej, Rákóczi, Bercsényi). As a contrast serves then Panna Czinka's ancient “violin lamentâ€. Following this, in a pierced-work-like fashion, the folk song The dew of green forest (Zöld erdo harmatát) comes in, then, as the culmination of the work, the well-known, wild Kuruc dance of CsÃnom Palkó appears. In conclusion, Kuruc Pictures is a tastefully constructed, finely harmonised and orchestrated orchestral tableau.

Der Erlkönig, or The Elf King, is based on Johann Goethe's late 18th-century poem of the same name in which a father and his young son ride home on horseback one dark and eerie night. The father tries to calm the increasingly fearful son by explaining everything the boy reports as simply leaves rustling in the wind or willows moving in the fog. Nonetheless, the father rides faster and faster home only to find the boy is dead in his arms when they arrive. Goethe's dark and gothic tale is brought to spine-tingling life in this harrowing, fast-paced tone poem for band. (3:20) This title available in MakeMusic Cloud.

The title of the suite Early Hungarian Dances from Gömör suggests the arrangement and harmonization of dance tunes, but this three-movement cycle is far more than that: in fact, the old court dances that provide the thematic material have been freely thought through and brought to completion. The composer has breathed new life into the 18th-century melodies, as Zoltán Kodály did with the Galanta and Marosszék dances, Antonin Dvo ák with Slav dances, and Johannes Brahms with those of Hungary. The chief virtues of the work are its colourful, varied instrumentation, the tasteful combination of its archaic style with the musical language of our day, and not least the fact thatits every bar is enjoyable to play and easy to listen to.

Händel's opera Scipio was written in 1725 and performed the following year in the King's Theatre, London. After Händel's death his operas fell into obscurity until the 1960s, when they experienced a major revival. This famous march from Scipio has however remained popular since its first performance and has been the Regimental Slow March of the British Grenadier Guards since the 18th century. The march is fairly simple and gives young bands the opportunity to play a well-known baroque melody which should be well within their technical ability.
