Most middle-school students read the moving story, There Will Come Soft Rains. The voiceclock in the story is represented by the 'ticktock' of the claves, and the music is lyrical and pastoral in nature. This work expresses that we are just a part of the cycle of life and the beauty of all that surrounds us will go on after we are gone. This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Fresh from the loss of his oldest daughter Maria Mahler, and knowing he had a serious heart condition, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) crafted Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) in the years 1908 and 1909. The first performance took place on November 20, 1911 at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter. It encompasses six settings of old Chinese poems, four of them by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Conscious of his own mortality, Mahler filled his orchestral song cycle with themes of resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The last song, roughly the same length as the previous five movements combined, serves as a sprawling, yet deeply personal farewell to both love and life. Instrumentation: 3(3rd dPicc)+Picc.3(3rd dEH).2+BCl+Eb.3(3rd dCBsn: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-5): 2Hp.Clst.Mand: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Soli T, A (or Bar). Movements: 1. Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde (The Drinking Song of Earth's Sorrow); 2. Der Einsame im Herbst (Autumn Loneliness); 3. Von der Jugend (Youth); 4. Von der Schönheit (Beauty); 5. Der Trunkene im Fruhling (Wine in Spring); 6. Der Abschied (The Farewell). Reprint edition.

This flexible piece in 4 parts was written by Jacob de Haan as a ‘theme tune’ for the Yamaha teaching method seminars in Germany. The solemn and dignified hymn-like melody will add a touch ofgrandeur to any performance. Its simplicity and rich harmonies suggest overtones of Land of Hope and Glory and this would be a good item to bring a deep and uplifting sense of occasion to your concert. Part of the British folk revival of the early 20th century, Gustav Holst's (1874-1934) Somerset Rhapsody consists of his interpretations of three English folk tunes from the Somerset region: The Sheep-Shearing Song, High Germany, and True Love's Farewell. Holst dedicated this piece, his first major critical success, to Cecil Sharp, a chronicler of English folk music who collected the songs that Holst adapted. Holst intended the cycle to tell a story of a young couple whose relationship is interrupted by war. Somerset Rhapsody premiered in London in April 1910. Instrumentation: 2(2dPicc).2(1dObd'mr).2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2-3): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Reprint edition.

Picture yourself in the marvellous paradise of Italy’s Grado Lagoon. The magnificent display of colour and the salty scent of sea air combine with the fragrant tamarisk to create a unique atmosphere. In this glorious haven time stands still - except for the flight of the seagulls and the slow flood tide. From a distance you hear an adagio coming through the air from a procession of boats. Its solemn tones dissipate into the landscape of the lagoon.

George Butterworth (1885-1916), an English composer whose life was cut short at the Battle of the Somme, wrote two song cycles based on A SHROPSHIRE LAD, a collection of 63 poems by A.E. Housman. Conceived as an epilogue, the orchestral rhapsody to A SHROPSHIRE LAD is widely considered to be his masterpiece. The London Symphony Orchestra gave the first performance at the Leeds Festival on October 2, 1913 under the direction of Arthur Nikisch. Originally titled THE LAND OF THE LOST CONTENT, it looks back at an idyllic world threatened, perhaps prophetically, by the fear of uncertainty and loss. Instrumentation: 2.2+EH.2+BCl.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp: Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
