The Innocent Condemned tells of the so-called buck riders (bokkerijders) who, in the middle of the 18th Century caused mayhem in the area around Limburg. Calmer passages in the music depict the fear of the locals, while a vivo furioso describes a night raid, and powerful drum sounds together with emotional musical lines illustrate the execution of an innocent. It is so easy to get caught up in our own personal feelings and worries that we sometimes don’t realize and appreciate the many blessings we have, especially friendships . On Wednesday, November 18, 2015 the Jefferson High School Band in Jefferson, Georgia lost two of its members to a fatal car accident . The victims were brothers . Music was a constant part of their lives, and the boys were talented percussionists in the marching band . To help with the grieving process the school and community commissioned this piece to celebrate the lives of William and Alex Trimble .As a father, I cannot imagine losing a child, let alone two, and beginning this piece was very difficult as I felt extreme anguish, especially for the parents . But it was decided the piece should primarily reflect the enthusiasm, youthful spirits and positive influence these two young men demonstrated as they were deeply loved by their band mates, community and family . There are four main themes, each representing the feelings and emotions that are certain to occur after a loss of loved ones . The first theme is a short, introductory fanfare, strong and bold, to stand for courage . A second dance-like melody features a liltingly mixed meter to portray a youthful and carefree innocence . This soon changes into a third more song-like, and stately theme intended to provide encouragement as we move forward through life .The middle of the piece includes a soft transition as two snare drummers give voice to the boys, allowing them to thank their friends and assuring them that it will be okay . This moves directly into a slow melody introduced by the saxophones (Alex, the younger brother was also a saxophonist) and is a time for reflection and allows for feelings of sadness at losing beloved friends . However, a second statement of the same theme, now at full volume with a strong percussion cadence, intends to lift the spirits and allows all friends to unite in joyous celebration of life . Both the enthusiastic dance theme and stately lyrical theme return, now in different keys, and work their way toward the highly energetic burst of glorious sound in the short and wild coda . When Hearts Tremble was written to celebrate the joys of youth and life, and should remind us that our friends and loved ones are precious, and we should live each day to bring more joy into the world and into the lives of others .

The version arranged by Gustav Holst became very popular in the British Isles - with a text that links it to December 28, the Day of the Holy Innocents. Philip Sparke based his adaptation on Holst’s powerful arrangement and has added various musical material himself. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Program Notes: Stylistically diverse -- tranquil, spirited pastoral, sensitive, energetic -- exhibiting a remarkable palette, the five movements of SINFONIA IX form a unique symphonic statement. Movement I, Prelude, is about contrasts: A lazy, smooth, motive in brasses alternates with, and then joins, an active and detached motive in woodwinds. The spirited Movement II, Morley's Ghost, is an intricate canonic collage and homage to that venerable theoretician & composer, Thomas Morley. By contrast, movement III, Dialog, speaks in a relaxed, lyrical, and pastoral language as it develops its gently rising and falling motives. Movement IV, Waltz, innocently celebrates the joys of childhood with a lilting melody and rondo form. For the rousing Finale, Movement V begins with a martial call of repeated-notes, heralding a headstrong journey of power and excitement. Like a number of the composer's other works, SINFONIA IX is based on earlier material: A brass sextet, written in 1966 when the composer was nineteen years old, forms the raw material for the first, third and fifth movements, while a later work, Martin's Waltz (a children's piece for flutes and clarinets composed in 1975) is the basis of the fourth movement. The second movement, however, is a fanciful contrapuntal commentary on Thomas Morley's 16th-century canzonet, Fire and Lightning. SINFONIA IX is dedicated to John Raforth, a distinguished band director and music educator at West High School in Madison, Wisconsin. The work was commissioned by his friends and former students, and was completed in 1977. Its first publication some twenty years later is a result of the increasing attention paid by university band directors to the earlier Sinfonias, particularly Sinfonia III (Hymns and Dances); Sinfonia V (Sinfonia Sacra et Profana); and now, Sinfonia IX. Whereas the first two works are wind ensemble compositions that have been championed equally by the concert band, Sinfonia IX is the composer's first college-level Sinfonia written especially for concert band. L’atmosphère est douce, le printemps s’éveille sur un air de danse joué par des musiciens de rue quand surgit par dessus les montagnes, l’escadron de la mort. L’enfer commence Guernica. L’œuvre se conclut dans une intense expression de supplication pour qu’une telle folie ne se reproduise plus.

The Dakota (or Sioux) Indians from the American states of North and South Dakota form the central figures in this composition. The work consists of five movements in which the culture and history of these Indians have been portrayed through musical paintings by making use of an old South Dakota Indian melody. Die Dakota- (oder Sioux-) Indianer der amerikanischen Staaten Nord- und Süd-Dakota sind die zentralen Figuren in dieser Komposition. Das Werk besteht aus fünf Sätzen, in welchen die Kultur und die Geschichte dieser Indianer dargestellt werden. In einigen Sätzen verwendete Jacob de Haan eine alte indianische Melodie aus Süd-Dakota.1. The Great Spirit (‘Der Große Geist’)Die Kultur der Dakota-Indianer war der irdischen und der spirituellen Welt verbunden. Sie glaubten, dass der Große Geist die Erde schuf, indem er einen schwarzen Ball auf das Wasser warf und dann aus einem zweiten Ball alles Lebendige schuf.2. Buffalo Hunting (‘Büffeljagd’)Auf einen mächtigenBüffel zuzureiten erforderte Können und Mut. Die Männer ergriffen jedoch mit Freude die Chance, sich selbst auf der Jagd zu beweisen.3. Pilgrims at Wounded Knee (‘Pilger am Wounded Knee‘)Die Tragödie von Wounded Knee ist sehr schmerzhaft für die Indianer. Viele pilgern noch immer zu der heiligen, vom Wind verwehten Hügelspitze, auf der so viele Unschuldige den Tod fanden. Dans leurs croyances, le Grand Esprit avait créé la terre en jetant une balle noire dans l’eau, puis il prit une deuxième balle et créa les êtres vivants. 2. Les pèlerins de Wounded Knee : la tragédie de Wounded Knee est un moment douloureux dans l’histoire des nations indiennes. Per conservare l’autenticit di questo popolo indiano anche attraverso la sua musica, il compositore ha integrato un’antica melodia indiana del Dakota del Sud nella sua composizione.
