Nico Schoeters took his first percussion lessons with Eric Buyle in the Academy for Music and Word in Boom, near Antwerp, after getting the hang of it through private lessons by Jozef Vervliet. Afterwards he continued his music studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, where he was taught by Leo Ouderits, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers. In 1998 he graduated there with great distinction as Master in percussion. After cooperating on various projects in Belgium and abroad as a freelance percussionist, Nico took up a position as a percussionist in the National Orchestra of Belgium. However, despite of all his achievements as a percussionist, Nico Schoeters didn’t take his first musical steps by playing percussion, but by playing the piano. His love for the piano remained a common thread in his musical career. For example, he played numerous gigs as a pianist with his jazz quartet ‘Just Friends, consisting of a number of top musicians who are his friends. In addition he started composing piano works in 2012. Cosmopolydian is my first composition for symphonic windband. It's a solo piece for flute and vibraphone which is dedicated to Inge Smedts, principal piccolo at the Royal Wind Band of the Belgian Guides. It is written in the context of a musical project ‘Cocktail Maison'. This project includes a concert on May 25th, 2017 in De Singel in Antwerp where this work will be premiered, a CD recording and a concert tour. All the pieces for this project are new compositions by Piet Swerts, Jef Neve, Klaas Coulembier, Etienne Houben, Bart Watté, Jan Huylebroeck, Francois Glorieux and myself. All the compositions are inspired by a cocktail. My choice is the Cosmopolitan, but the non-alcoholic version, the mocktail actually. The title Cosmopolydian is a nod to the lydian scale which I used as a base for the majority of the piece. The idea behind the music is an image of children enjoying themselves, worry-free, during the holidays. Tired but satisfied, they go to sleep and have wonderful dreams. The next day they wake up to start a beautiful new day.The work is constructed in a typical ABA form. A quick first part: ‘sparkling allegro', which of course should sound very light and playful. A slow middle part warm adagio, in which the beautiful dreams become audible. The last part is a re-exposition of the first part in which eventually all the themes merge into the final.

Traffic Jam represents my idea of rush hour rock. This work derives its automotive charm from the various car horn effects played throughout. The most important articulation in the work is the marcato accent. Whenever this articulation appears, a car horn is being honked. Each honk should be percussive and short. Although the honks are dissonant, their composite notes should be balanced. It is recommended that the various honks be isolated during rehearsal, so that just the right sound and feel is achieved. Other important sounds include the police whistle and bulb horn. These novelty instruments should be held high for the audience to see and hear. With over 4 million miles of roads in the United States, one is destined to experience automotive gridlock. So before giving into road rage, roll down the windows, turn on the radio, and enjoy a traffic jam!

Lightning Fingers showcases the musical and technical virtuosity of the solo clarinetist in this original work by legendary bandmaster and composer Henry Fillmore. This unusual concert work, commissioned by the concert band ?Harmonie Concorde? from Sanem in Luxembourg, is built on two basic ideas: the evolution of the economic and social context of this Luxembourg city with its strong mining industry and the European concept, which is clearly present in this very small but prosperous country with its many European institutes. This is musically expressed in a few quotes from the European hymn Ode to Joy, the closing of Beethoven?s Ninth Symphony and from the Te Deum by Charpentier ? widely known as the signature tune for Eurovision broadcasts. A work of true unity.

Concordia è un brano commissionato a Jan Van der Roost dall’Orchestra di Fiati Concorde di Sanem in Lussemburgo. Questo inusuale brano da concerto si appoggia su due elementi principali: l’evoluzione del contesto economico e sociale di questa citt lussemburghese situata in una regione mineraria, e l’ideale europeo evidenziato da una ricca gamma di suoni e dall’utilizzo di qualche frammento dell’Inno alla Gioia e del Te Deum.

This work, reminiscent of a film score, describes the history of the Dutch town Horn. A broad lyrical theme, played by the horns, depicts the history of this town on the river Meuse. A cheerful Allegro represents rural life around the town and its castle. Following this the horn theme returns and the music changes dramatically. A drum roll symbolises the times of war that the town and castle have known. The threatening music eventually develops once more into the hopeful horn theme, a sign of reconstruction and the future.

Piet Swerts (*1960) hat sich beim Schreiben dieses Werks musikalisch durch amerikanische Filmmusik, u. a. von John Williams, inspirieren lassen. Durch ein breites, lyrisches Horn-Thema wird die Entstehung des niederländischen Ortes Horn am Fluss Maas dargestellt. Dieses Thema symbolisiert die drei Hörner, die auf dem Wappenschild des Dorfes und des Grafen von Horn vorkommen. Ein munteres Allegro typisiert, wie in der Pastorale von Beethoven, das ländliche Leben rund um das Dorf und sein Schloss. Danach kommt das Thema der Hörner zurück und die Musik nimmt eine dramatische Wendung. Trommelwirbel symbolisieren Krieg! Die drohende Musik löst sich dann wieder imhoffnungsvollen Thema der Hörner auf.

Fantasy Tales décrit l’histoire de la ville de Horn aux Pays-Bas. L’œuvre développe un thème mélodique épique, lyrique, quasi filmique, qui retrace l’évolution de cette ville située sur les rives de la Meuse. L’interprétation de ce thème par les cors a une portée symbolique. En effet, le blason de la ville et les armoiries du comté de Horn sont constitués de trois cors de chasse rouges sur fond jaune. Un allegro joyeux, écrit dans le style d’une pastorale, dépeint la vie rurale autour de la ville et de son ch teau. Le thème initial est réexposé, mais la musique prend une tournure plus dramatique pour évoquer, travers des roulements de tambours, lesdiverses périodes de guerre. L’espoir renaît néanmoins. Le thème premier est repris et se fait le signe de la reconstruction, et de l’expansion. La ville de Horn est désormais tournée vers le futur.
