This Christmas carol of ancient European origin begins O Sanctissima and was intended as a tribute to the virgin Mary. A 19th-century translation by Falk gave us the words O How Joyfully that are typically associated with this carol. In addition to its colorful history, this carol has a very warm and expressive character. In this setting by Alfred Reed, the lilting melody is interwoven with a heroic trumpet counter-melody.

The tradition of the Christmas tree in Western Europe dates back to a time long before any Christianization had taken place. During the severely cold winter nights, so it was believed, evil spirits tried to 'kill' nature. Needle-leaved trees were the only ones which kept their green colour throughout the year, and therefore became symbols of immortality. These 'living' trees, said to be the work of benign spirits, were brought into people's houses to ward off evil, life-threatening powers. In the 14th century people first started to decorate Christmas trees. It was a pagan custom, originated by the inhabitants of Alsace. This custom was taken over by the Church inthe course of the 15th and 16th century. At first the decoration consisted mainly of edibles, such as apples and wafers, but later small presents were added. Legend has it that the reformer Martin Luther was the first person to decorate a Christmas tree with candles. The flickering candle flames were meant to create the image of a starry sky in which Christ's apparition could be recognized. The German organ-player Ernst Anschütz from Leipzig was the first person to notate the song 'O Tannenbaum', the melody being a well-known folk song. Next to 'Stille Nacht' 'O Tannenbaum' is the most famous German Christmas song, now known throughout the world. In the United States of America the melody of 'O Tannenbaum' has even been used in four States (among which the State of Maryland) for their State song. In David Well's arrangement the song is first heard as many of us know it. After this introduction, however, it is transformed into a solid rock version, and the beat has been changed. In the second part the familiar three-four time is back, but here the rhythm is different from the original. After the richly ornamented rock beat the basic theme can be heard once again and the composition is concluded in a festive manner.

Mount Vernon Square derives its title from the location of the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland. It was here that the composer Joseph Compello took his first classes in Music Theory from Professor Haven Hensler, to whom this march is dedicated. After hearing this march performed on piano as part of final exam requirements in a Music Theory course, Professor Hensler encouraged further exploration of music composition, leading Compello into a prolific career writing pieces like this theme, now years later arranged for full band as a concert march. Performance Notes The form of the march is a standard A-BB-Trio-C-A. Melodically, much of the march is based on the figure contained in mm. 8 and 9. Tempo, articulation, and dynamics in a standard march style are essential to a successful interpretation. Pay particular attention to dynamics in the second strain at m. 41. Strive for a legato diminuendo at the transition in mm. 63-65. The melody in the Trio (m. 70) will also require smooth articulation from low brass and woodwinds. The Euphonium counter-melody will be played only during the repeat of the Trio. The Breakup Strain (m. 87) is, of course, powerfully marcato as is the reprise of the first theme at m. 109.Mount Vernon Square derives its title from the location of the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Maryland. Imstrumentation: Solo Horn & Wind Ensemble Duration: Composed: 2004 Published by: Dunsinane Music Composer's Note: Great Scott! was commissioned by Mary Ann Craig, Director of Bands at Montclair State University for the MSU Wind Ensemble, and is dedicated to Mr. Jeffrey Scott. A work in one movement, Great Scott! may be heard as a stream of consciousness in the mind of the soloist. The work opens with the soloist quietly reflecting. The remnants of a dance tune are heard in the lower brass, as if from a radio, and the soloist unselfconsciously incorporates this material into his musings. He is joined by the ensemble, which reiterates and makes emphatic the soloist’s reflections. A variation of the dance tune, now integrated with the soloist’s ideas, is heard in the saxophones, soon joined by the French horn, gradually leading to a quieter section that again incorporates and expands the gathering musical materials. This leads to the central, lyric section of the piece—where the soloist returns to his initial musings, now amplified by the ensemble. This time, the dance music is not heard separately—in essence, it has been re-constructed by the soloist with contributions from the ensemble. A fanfare-like section follows, featuring brass and timpani. After a brief pause, the opening material is heard a final time, now with an active, rapid surface, as the piece rushes to a close.

The word “nexus” is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus, for solo trumpet and band, includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-known theme (particularly to Mr. Watkins' students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings. An energetic and agile scherzo appears in the beginning and again at the end, and is contrasted with an expressive Ballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred's son! This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. The Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep IV, better known as Achnaton, was the second son and successor of Amenhotep III. He reigned the New Kingdom from 1353 until 1336 BC. Achnatons lack of interest in the economic well-being of Egypt ushered ina revolutionary period in Egyptian history. His harsh reign induced much suffering under the population. During this period when it was customary for a pharaoh to have many wives, he had taken his cousin Nefertete to reign as queen at hisside. An elegant and very beautiful woman, she used her influence to ease the turmoil caused by Achnaton. Combined with her grace, her presence at public functions led to a greater popularity among her subjects than the pharaoh enjoyedhimself. Being mostly preoccupied with religious questions, he declared that all the other gods did not exist. There was only one god, the Aten, and it was the sun itself. It was now necessary to change his name: ‘Amenhotep’ meaning ‘the god Amun is satisfied’, because he didnt want to be associated with Amun or any of the other deities. He renamed himself ‘Achnaton’ which means ‘servant of the Aten’ -- a much more appropriate title! In the sixth year of his reignAchnaton also moved the capital to a brand new city called Achet-Aton (‘the Horizon of the Aten’) which was where Tel el-Amarna stands today. He did this to further isolate himself from the ‘old’ religion, since the previous capital Thebes was thecentre of worship of Amun. This new religion created an up rise among the population and high priests. In spite of Nefertetes influence, the falling economy and religious conflict resulted in the decline of the Egyptian empire. Hoping toforget it ever happened, people later tried to eradicate all traces of Achnaton and his successors rule by smashing their statues, mutilating their mummies, and ruining their relief carvings. From that moment on he was remembered as the‘heretic king’.
