Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains was commissioned by the Northern California Band Directors' Association to honour their 50th Anniversary in 2012. The first performance was given by the Association’s 2012 Honor Band, conducted by Dr Royce Trevis, in the Harlen Adams Theater, California State University, Chico, California, on 4th February that year.The brief for the commission asked for a piece that celebrated the United States’ natural resources and composer Philip Sparke turned to Katharine Lee Bates’s lyrics for the song America the Beautiful, of which the first and last verses are:O beautiful for spacious skies,For amber waves of grain,For purplemountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining seaThe three movements each take their title from these verses:1. O Beautiful for Spacious Skies: Opening with filigree woodwind figuring, this movement aims to recreate the light and lightness of a spring sky, birds and blossoms floating on gentle breezes.2. From Sea to Shining Sea: A vivacious celebration of water bubbling in streams, rivers and lakes.3. Cittaslow is an international network of more than 220 towns in 30 countries. Its members are towns where people are still finding themselves reminiscing over the old times; towns that are rich in theatres, squares, cafés, restaurants and spiritual places; towns with untouched landscapes and charming craftsman where people are still able to recognize the slow course of the seasons, and respect their authentic products, true taste as well as their health. The Hymn of Cittaslow, which was commissioned by the organisation itself, is entirely inspired by their commitment to the preservation of the member towns. The tempo is naturally ‘slow', and the themes somehow soundfamiliar. On the one hand, the music emanates peace and quiet, but it also sounds grand in its lyricism, thereby reflecting the beauty of the Cittaslow towns. Cittaslow is een internationaal netwerk van meer dan 220 gemeenten verspreid over 30 landen. De aangesloten plaatsen zijn gemeenten waar mensen nieuwsgierig zijn naar vroeger, waar een rijke schakering aan theaters, pleinen, cafés, restaurants en spirituele plekken te vinden is, met een ongerept landschap en innemende ambachtslieden, waar mensen de langzame tred van de seizoenen nog herkennen en hun authentieke producten, ware smaak en gezondheid eerbiedigen. Sea of Hope is an optimistic work about new land arisen from the former Zuiderzee (the Netherlands). In the introduction, the sea is conveyed in all its glory and ferocity, through a melody that keeps you wondering whether it makes you happy or sad. Then, finally, there is a glimmer of hope, when the water is dammed up and the land partly reclaimed (by conversion into polder land). The town of Dronten, for instance, develops into a place where one day two people meet up and fall in love. This love is reflected in the slow, passionate middle movement. New life in the town is celebrated joyfully: the zest for life clearly shines through this part of the work, followed byoptimism and celebration in the closing bars. Sea of Hope is een optimistisch werk over nieuw land, ontstaan vanuit de genadeloze voormalige Zuiderzee. In de inleiding wordt deze zee in al haar glorie en smart bezongen door een melodie waarvan je eigenlijk niet weet of je er blij of verdrietig van wordt. Dan gloort er eindelijk hoop als het water wordt ingedamd en deels in polderland verandert. Zo ontwikkelt het dorp Dronten zich tot een plaats waar twee mensen elkaar op een dag ontmoeten om de liefde te vinden. Deze liefde wordt weerspiegeld in het langzame, gepassioneerde middengedeelte. Het leven in het dorp wordt met blijdschap gevierd: de levensvreugde spat er in dit snelle deel van af en wordt gevolgd dooroptimistische, vreugdevolle slotmaten. Sea of Hope ist ein optimistisches Werk über das neue Land, das aus der unbarmherzigen ehemaligen Zuiderzee (Niederlande) entstanden ist. In der Einleitung wird das Meer mit all seiner Herrlichkeit und seinem Leid durch eine Melodie dargestellt, bei der man sich fragt, ob sie fröhlich oder traurig macht. Dann gibt es schließlich einen Hoffnungsschimmer, als das Wasser aufgestaut und teilweise in eine Polderlandschaft umgewandelt wird. So entwickelt sich die Stadt Dronten zu einem Ort, an dem sich eines Tages zwei Menschen begegnen und ineinander verlieben. Diese Liebe wird in dem langsamen und leidenschaftlichen mittleren Satz zum Ausdruck gebracht. Das gemeinsameneue Leben in der Stadt wird fröhlich gefeiert: Die Lebensfreude kommt in diesem Teil des Werkes deutlich zum Ausdruck und es folgen optimistische und feierliche Schlusstakte. Sea of Hope est une œuvre optimiste concernant la nouvelle terre créée sur l’ancienne Zuiderzee (Pays-Bas). Dans l’introduction, la mer est représentée dans toute sa gloire et dans sa douleur par une mélodie qui évoque toutes sortes d’émotions contradictoires. Ensuite, enfin, on retrouve une lueur d’espoir lorsque l’eau est barrée et une partie de la terre est transformée en polder. Le développement de la ville de Dronten, par exemple, permet deux personnes de se rencontrer et de tomber amoureux. Cet amour est représenté par le mouvement lent et passionné du milieu. La célébration de cette nouvelle joie de vivre de la ville transparaît dans cette partie de l’œuvre,suivie par les dernières mesures optimistes et festives.

‘The Fellowship’ is a musical homage to friendship and camaraderie, symbolised in two alternating, complementary themes. The themes are based on popular songs from two sister municipalities, one lying in Normandy (France), and the other in Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany). Through the merging of their songs in this composition, their bond of friendship is sealed for eternity. The Fellowship staat voor vriendschap en kameraadschap. Deze symboliek komt tot uiting in twee thema’s, die elkaar afwisselen en elkaar aanvullen. Het ene thema is gebaseerd op een Frans lied, het andere op een Duits lied. The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction. This piece was commissioned by Matsudo Citizen Wind Orchestra for their 30th anniversary concert and premiêred by the band conducted by Kenichiro Hasunuma in July 2009. This piece is typical of Satoshi Yagisawa in that it depicts a magnificent spectacle. This one is set in ancient Egypt and is based on the story depicted in the famous film “The Ten Commandments†(1956, directed by Cecil B. DeMille). One day Moses, who was raised by the rich royal family, found out that he was originally Hebrew. The Hebrews had been forced to live as slaves. Ramses, the prince directly descended from the Pharaoh, envied Moses’ strength and popularity. After internal argument Moses decides todeliver the Hebrew from the Pharaoh’s tyranny and escape from Egypt with them.The music starts with brilliant royal fanfare and depicts magnificent architecture, the Hebrew people forced into hard labour, and the slaves escaping from the Pharaoh’s tyranny. At the climax they are at crisis point, trapped by the sea. Moses waves his staff and the miracle happens; the sea parts and Hebrew people successfully escape. Following on from Perseus - A Hero’s Quest in the Heavens, this work Moses and Ramses is another piece written in the dramatic style favoured by Satoshi Yagisawa. Après Perseus - A Hero’s Quest in the Heavens, Satoshi Yagisawa nous livre une nouvelle œuvre dramatique, flamboyante et épique. L’action se déroule en Égypte ancienne, et suit la chronologie du célèbre film biblique Les Dix Commandements (1956), du réalisateur américain Cecil B. DeMille. Le jeune Mo segrandit au sein de la riche famille royale égyptienne. Devenu adulte, il découvre ses origines hébra ques. Or, Pharaon a réduit les Hébreux en esclavage. Le prince Ramsès, descendant direct de Pharaon, envie la force et la gloire de Mo se. Après une querelle grave, Mo se doit fuir dans le désert. Dans son exil, il décide de délivrer son peuple de la tyrannie de Pharaon et de le mener hors d’Égypte. L’œuvre débute avec une fanfare royale flamboyante qui sonne la grandeur architecturale de l’Égypte. Le peuple d’Israël est condamné subir les travaux forcés ; des esclaves échappent la tyrannie du Pharaon. Lorsque la musique atteint sa densité maximale, les Hébreux en fuite sont acculés devant la mer Rouge. Mo se invoque Dieu. Celui-ci lui ordonne de lever son b ton au-dessus des eaux de la mer Rouge. Mo se obéit et le miracle se produit ; les eaux se divisent en deux pour laisser passer les enfants d’Israël.

Les champs, filmés au fil des saisons, s’imposent comme l’élément central du développement.Le premier mouvement présente des vues sur des vastes étendues et des images de fermes. La musique se fait rêveuse. Installée dans un tempo lent puis évoluant sous la forme de phrases courtes, une mélodie « wagnérienne » monte de l’orchestre. chaque phrase correspond une autre perspective. La structure chemine vers une conclusion plus ample, plus généreuse, qui reprend le thème initial. Le secondmouvement nous livre des impressions musicales du sol noir, typique de la région. On voit des tracteurs labourer la terre, on entend les grains de céréales germer. La musique engendre un climat mystérieux et plein de suspense. Lentement, mais avec fluidité, nous assistons la floraison des céréales.Le troisième et dernier mouvement dessine la période des moissons et des récoltes : le chargement et le déchargement de l’orge, du ma s, des pommes de terre et des betteraves. La musique bat au rythme d’un mouvement mécanique qui illustre le mouvement de l’arracheuse-chargeuse de pommes de terre. Quelques passages plus romantiques viennent agrémenter le développement. Le thème final est magistral. L’œuvre se clôt sur des images musicales de l’hiver. La terre se repose.
