About Build-A-Band Series
The Build-A-Band Series provides educational and enjoyable music for bands with incomplete or unbalanced instrumentation. Written using just four or five parts (plus percussion), these effective arrangements will work with any combination of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments as long as you distribute the parts so that each of the five parts is covered. All of the publications in the Build-A-Band Series have been arranged to be playable with any instrumentation as long as each part is used: 1st Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part, 4th Part, and Bass Part. (Please note: In some of these arrangements the 4th Part, and the Bass Part are the same, making it possible to play those arrangements with only 4 parts.)

Sbandiamo! is a joyous—and swinging—work, taking its title from the wind music event held annually in the medieval Italian city of Gubbio, Umbria in which various bands from all over Italy participate. The first performance of this piece was given at the Piazza Grande, Gubbio, under the baton of the composer himself, with a wind band of some 250 musicians. A stately introduction, with festive percussion, is followed by a catchy theme in alternating pop and march rhythms. The opening theme then returns as a marcia cantabile, and the work is brought to a grand and compelling conclusion.Sbandiamo! is zowel een vreugdevol als swingend werk. De titel verwijst naar het gelijknamige blaasmuziekevenement in de middeleeuwse stad Gubbio in Umbrië (Italië). JOHANN STRAUSS II (1825-1899) initially wrote FRÜHLINGSSTIMMEN, Op. 410 (VOICES OF SPRING) as a concert aria. He dedicated the piece, with a libretto by Richard Genée, to pianist-composer Alfred Grünfeld. When Bertha Schwarz (stage name, Bianca Bianchi) sang the first performance at the Theater an der Wien on March 1, 1883, the audience loved it so much that they demanded an encore. The composer wasted no time in arranging a purely orchestral version, which the Strauss Orchestra premiered only seventeen days later. The waltz achieved great success during his Russian tour in 1886. This edition for reduced orchestra was arranged by Adolphe Dumont. In 2006 Brabant will be celebrating it’s 900th anniversary. On May 13th 1106 the count Van Leuven was appointed duke of Brabant. This was the birth of the duchy of Brabant. For centuries this duchy, situated in the heart of the Netherlands, was the primary of the seventeen provinces in the Lowlands. Brabant formed with it’s capital cities Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and ‘s-Hertogenbosch the focal point for politics, culture and economy. The revolution against Spain (1566-1648) caused a fracture between the North and South. The old duchy was divided into a Dutch and Belgian part. Even though each had their own historical background, the bond forged in the past was partially keptalive. To this day we still have a duke of Brabant. Ralph Vaughan Williams' (1872-1958) English Folk Songs Suite, IRV 16, consists of three movements, the first two of which are based on the folk songs Seventeen Come Sunday and My Bonny Boy; the third adapts four songs from the Somerset region collected by Cecil Sharp. The English Folk Songs Suite quotes the Christmas carol Dives and Lazarus, which Vaughan Williams later published five variations of for harp and string orchestra. Gordon Jacob, a student of Vaughan Williams, arranged this version for orchestra. An earlier version of the English Folk Songs Suite, written for military band, premiered at Kneller Hall in Twickenham, England in July 1923.
