Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 film The Godfather is seen by many to be a turning point in cinematic history. The sparse score, written by Nino Rota, is famous for its haunting main theme, played by a solo trumpet, from which The Godfather Waltz is derived. Philip Sparke has created a stunning arrangement of this theme, which appears in all three parts of the trilogy. Tchaikovsky is best known for his purely instrumental compositions. However, we must not underestimate him as a composer of operas. Many of his operas such as ¬Pique Dame and Eugene Onegin are still performed regularly throughout the world. Eugene Onegin (also called Jevgeny Onegin), composed in 1877-1878, was not called an opera by Tchaikovsky himself, but “lyric scenesâ€. The work is entirely dominated by lyricism. However, there are two moments that contrast sharply with this lyricism: two ball scenes, for which Tchaikovsky wrote a waltz and a polonaise. After opening with a less well-known allegro dansant, this arrangement features the aforementioned waltz, which can beconsidered a beautiful Russian equivalent of the Faust Waltz by Charles Gounod. In the opera, this waltz is actually played by a military band. The arrangement concludes with the pompous polonaise (also mentioned above) which opens the last act: the ideal music to characterize high aristocracy in the salon of a palace in St. Petersburg.

David Marlatt's The Three Rings captures the spirit of a traditional circus with several acts represented by stereotypical forms of music such as a waltz and march as well as some more modern and contemporary harmonies and rhythms. Each act is interrupted by another which simulates the audience moving their attention from one ring to another. Sections include: The Greatest Show on Earth!, The Trapeze Artists, The Acrobats, The Clowns, The Magic Box, and The Magician. (6:00).

Carl Strommen, an alumnus of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, composed A Walk in the Park for Walter Avenllaneda's John F. Kennedy High School Band. This composition features dynamic brass and sweeping & energetic woodwind lines. Adhere to natural phrases for which the music of Carl Strommen is known, especially in the beginning and end of the piece, to achieve the full sustained chords that are written. Make sure to bring out the three- note motif as it is orchestrated throughout the piece even in the beginning. The fast sections should be vibrant, energetic and with exaggerated dynamics that follow the line shapes. The Waltz in the middle requires a complete change of style and adds a wonderful contrast to the energy of the piece. The transition out of the Waltz into the new tempo will take some time but is well worth the effort to pull it off. The energy returns until we get a wonderful dramatic and bold ending.Carl Strommen, an alumnus of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, composed A Walk in the Park for Walter Avenllaneda’s John F. The story of a sleepless night, Dreams and Fancies uses musical episodes to depict definite pictures: the three accented pulses of the main theme signifying a kind of fate, a demented waltz which breaks down, a love theme in the middle, then a wild jazz party. The end is a huge climax - a grand ceremony in which the lovers marry, but haunted by the three accented pulses of the first theme, representing a dark fate. This is a story of a sleepless night: fancy is the old English word for a musical fantasy. There are musical episodes, some of which are associated with definite pictures: the three accented pulses of the main theme signifying a kind of fate, a demented waltz which breaks down, a love theme in the middle, then a wild jazz party. The themes all come together as the music becomes more exciting towards the end with thematic interjections appearing as flashbacks. The end is a huge climax - a grand ceremony in which the lovers marry, but haunted by the three accented pulses of the first theme, representing a dark fate. Musically the piece is unifying in two ways. Firstly, all the themes are built from the opening 15 bars. Secondly, the pulse of the music remains virtually constant with each beat around 76 per minute. This means that the tempi need to relate to each other: a difficult task for the conductor!

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village ofMorschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:1 EARTH STARis rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.2 OCEAN DREAMuses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.3 BLUE HEARTwas written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Soloist: Difficulty 6Diamond Concerto is available for euphonium and piano (AMP 374-401) as well as for euphonium and brass band (AMP 354-030). This incredible arrangement for beginning band that features the magnificent overture from the operetta Die schöne Galathee by Franz von Suppé is freshly scored with the original waltz melody using only quarter notes as the most complex rhythmic component, a very light bass, and complemented by ornamental percussion parts. A tremendous introduction to three-quarter time! (1:45).

Alfred Reed needs no introduction for those who admire his distinguished concert band works. This arrangement for concert band draws from five movements of his original 28 composed for brass quintet based on London Bridge Is Falling Down. Included are: Statement, Waltz, March Fo(u)rth!, A Little Funeral Music, Please (Eine Kleine Trauermusik), and Finale. A demonstration of compositional techniques practiced during the past three centuries, the work is filled with captivating and highly musical moments. Even though players will encounter a few changes in tonal centers, meters, and tempo throughout, there is not much that would get in the way of having a fun experience learning and performing. Kentish Dances was commissioned by the Bromley Youth Music Trust for the Bromley Youth Concert Band - Michael Purton, conductor. Bromley is in Kent, the most southeasterly of all the English counties. Kent has a rich folk history and, like many parts of the country, its own home-grown dance tunes. What has become known in England as “country dancing†became popular during the Elizabethan period amongst the middle and upper classes, who preferred the style to the more formal galliards and pavans of the royal court. This suite is based on three dance tunes that originated in Kent; the first is a sort of moto perpetuo based on two lively 6/8 tunes, “Dover Castle†and “The Fair Maid of Wickham.†The middle movement uses the rather sombre “Blackheath,†contrasting it with the charming and apt “Bromley Bells.†The finale uses the sprightly “We Are All Right at Canterbury and Ramsgate Pier,†using the lilting “Northdown Waltz†as a lyrical contrast.

Bella Italia is a medley of three Neapolitan songs that were made famous and popular by the tenor Mario Lanza. The work opens with the graceful waltz Santa Lucia, which is followed by a Latin-style version of O Sole Mio, a melody that became even more well known when used by Elvis Presley as the basis of the song It’s Now or Never. The cheerful Funiculì, Funicul ends the medley in 6/8 time. This arrangement for concert band by Roland Kernen will appeal to a broad audience and will leave both the band and the audience in a high-spirited mood. In this three-part piece, Peter Kleine Schaars uses the initials of the German concert band association otherwise known as the Bund Deutscher Blasmusikverbände (BDB). With ‘B’ equating to a B flat, various themes based on this sequence of notes follow one another: a funky fanfare, a comical waltz and a soulful set in a Mowtown style. With this much variety your audience will soon be in the groove!
