The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). It was first performed by students of Kiev University in December 1916. The tune is an adaptation of an old ‘shchedrivka’, a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year’s Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. In Shchedryk, Leontovych added his own the lyrics which concern the legend claiming that when Jesus was born, all the bells on earth started ringing in his honour.The tune has since been the inspiration of at least four different Christmas carols, but Philip Sparke has sourced the originalUkrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement. Written in response to the tragic events in Kiev in 2014, this music draws on the old Ukrainian folk song Plyve Kacha, which became an anthem for many protestors as a symbol of national pride while also mourning the fallen. Described by the composer as Arabian Dances meets Moscow, 1941, the music is incredibly powerful yet introspective. Quotes of the Ukrainian National Anthem add to the intensity of the music, which features the instrumentalists singing in 4-part harmony at the very end of the piece. Absolutely stunning.

Gopak is the first movement of a set of Symphonic Dances written for the Hofstra Unibersity Wind Ensemble, directed by Peter Boonshaft, who commissioned and premiered the work in 2009. Gopak is a tribute to my Polish and Ukrainian roots. My father used to dance traditional Ukrainian dances including the Gopak, and some of my earliest musical memories include the joyful, energetic, and rhythmic feel of those wonderful folk dances.Gopak has a strong feeling of two beats, is accented quite heavily, and is energetic from beginning to end. The melodies are completely original, but the lively feel of the music calls to my mind the energy of the Gopak, notes composer Eric Ewazen.

The Ukrainian Dmitri Bortniansky (1751-1825) received lessons at the local singing school in his hometown of Hlukhiv, and soon his extraordinary talent was recognised. He was somewhat of a child prodigy, writing his first opera at a young age. Following his studies Bortniansky was appointed court composer and Kapellmeister of the Imperial Chapel Choir. In the period that followed, he wrote - in addition to a number of operas, instrumental works, and a cycle of songs - more than a hundred religious works for a cappella choir, in which he combined Russian-orthodox and Ukrainian traditions with late 18th century European music. The appealing melody of Ich bete an die Macht derLiebe (Prayer to the Power of Love) became well-known, especially in Germany, in combination with German text by Gerhard Tersteegen. This arrangement by Michael Bilkes reflects the atmosphere of the original work very well. Die Chormusik des russischen Komponisten Dmitri Bortniansky zeugt von großem technischen Können und reflektiert zugleich ein tiefes spirituelles Verständnis. Die Melodie zu Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe erlangte mit dem Text von Gerhard Tersteegen besonders im deutschsprachigen Raum einen großen Bekanntheitsgrad. Die vorliegende Blasorchesterbearbeitung von Michael Bilkes gibt die Stimmung des Originals sehr gut wieder.
