Jean-Baptiste Arban (1825-1889) wrote and arranged over 300 pieces of music with his cornet a pistons solos being the most important to trumpet and cornet players. After his death much of his work fell into obscurity during the twentieth century. Rediscovering Arban's masterful music was the motivation for compiling this collection of cornet pieces.Included pieces are: Variations Brilliantes Fantaisie brillante sur l'air populaire de Marlborough Fantaisie brillante sur des motifs de La Cenerentola de Gioachino Rossini Le Pre aux Clercs Romance de Mignon de Ambroise Thomas among other brilliant works. This collection of solos represents a veryimportant piece of Arban's legacy. Includes a Piano accompaniment audio CD for effective practice.

Guillaume Balay (1871-1943) served in the French military as a prolific Cornet player having won first place in the 1894 Cornet Award competition at the National Academy of Music in Paris. His compositions were popular in the Cornet and brass repertoire at the time including his Pièce De Concours for Cornet with Piano accompaniment. This Balay work remains within the brass repertoire to this day and is suitable for advanced level players as an audition or competition piece as indicated by the title as well as a performance work. Pièce De Concours contains use ofcadenza passages variation in time signature semiquaver flourishes articulations complex rhythms and chromaticism amongst other aspects. This quirky piece by Balay provides the advanced Cornet player with a fun alternative work which will show off their technical ability.

For Bb Cornet or Bb Trumpet with Piano accompaniment  Fantaisie was composed by Francis Thomé. Written for the Paris Conservatoire contest in 1902 this piece is very musical and quite challenging and would fit upper intermediate players. This piece can sound quite dramatic but is very melodious too and can be considered as an important addition to the repertoire for Trumpet and Cornet. Francis Thomé (1850-1909) was a French pianist and a composer. He wrote some operas some ballets some operettas and some pantomimes.

The texture is predominantly melody-dominated homophony with the occassional use of call-and-response between the melody instrument and Piano accompaniment. This quirky two movement piece by Balay provides the intermediate Cornet Saxhorn or Trumpet player with a fun alternative performance piece.

Composed by Philippe Gaubert  Cantabile Et Scherzetto is a piece for Bb Cornet and Piano. Written as a contest piece for the Paris Conservatoire it would brilliantly match the skills of an upper-intermediate Cornet player. The Piano part is also for an equal level. Published in 1909 this piece is generally thoroughly enjoyed by players and is divided into two parts. The first part the cantabile enables the player to work on their phrasing while the scherzetto is good training for triple tonguing. Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a French flautist composer and conductor. He wrote manypieces of chamber music including three Sonatas for Flute and Piano and some Fantasies.

Morceau de Concert by J. G. Pennequin was composed in 1907. Initially written for Trumpet and Piano this arrangement for Cornet and Piano is very melodic and quite challenging for the Cornet part. Quite fast this very enjoyable work lasts 7 minutes and needs some advanced skills. The piece starting by the Piano shows a continuous exchange between the Cornet and the Piano. J. G. Pennequin (1864-1914) was a very famous Violin teacher in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. He was also the first Violin of the Opera-Comique and an accompanist of the Salle Pleyel. Winning First Prize of the Paris Conservatory he wrote a complete method for Violin as well as an elementary method. A sonata for Violin by André Gedalge was dedicated to him.

French composer Eugène Cools published his Solo De Concours for Cornet and Piano in 1958. The work remains an important audition work particularly at the Paris Conservatoire. Cools' Solo De Concours addresses advanced features of the Cornet including semiquaver flourishes chromaticism and variations in performance directions amongst other aspects. For all aspiring Cornet performers Cools' Solo De Concours is an essential addition to the repertoire.

Morceau De Concours (1903) is a work for Cornet and Piano by Augustin Savard. Composed for the Paris Conservatoire contest this piece lasts approximately seven minutes and can be played by upper-intermediate and above level players . Starting solemnly the first half of the piece is quite slow while the second half is more energetic and more cheerful. This piece would also be great to use in recitals. Augustin Savard (1861-1942) is a French composer who won the Prix de Rome who composed some oratories and some orchestral works.
