Variations on a Mozart tune, for Flute and Piano is a piece composed by Reynaldo Hahn and dedicated to Philippe Gaubert. Composed after a tune by Mozart, this piece features a main theme and a total of seven variations whichfollow one another. The Flute score features many trills, especially in the Variation 2, some fast rhythms and up to 6 flats on the key for the Variation 4. It would require a good mastery of techniques for these challengingparts. Reynaldo Hahn was a naturalised French composer, conductor, theatre director and singer. Best known as a composer of songs, he also wrote many pieces and melodies for different instruments.

“With music for Flute Quartets being most commonly rearranged for the ensemble, it is unusual that a work is originally composed for that precise instrumentation. It is for that reason that Pierre Max Dubois' Quatuor for Flutes has been considerably well-received. As a student of Darius Milhaud, Dubois brought ideas of Les Six, of which Milhaud was a member, into the mid-1900s. Dubois' compositions are characteristically light with interesting and unusual harmonic and melodic textures, as conveyed in this Quatuor for Flutes. With all four parts being technically demanding, exploiting extended techniques to the maximum, this piece provides a challenging but enjoyable performance. Moreover, including a full score and separate parts, this edition is ideal. With few pieces for this instrumentation exisitng as original compositions, all Flute Quartets must ensure they try out Dubois' enticing four-movement piece. â€.

“This is the Japanese version of De la Sonorité, a book published in 1934 and written by the French flautist and composer Marcel Moyse (1889-1984), proposing a method to acquire a beautiful sonority on the Flute. Created for the use of advanced flautists, the exercises should give a means to the players to transform their sounds and obtain a different and better tone. De la Sonorité is divided into five parts: 1. Timbre and homogeneity of tone in the 3 registers 2. Suppleness of tone (especially in the low register) 3. Attacking and slurring notes 4. Fullness of tone 5. Management of tone in interpretation Considered as a maestro by some musicians, Marcel Moyse has composed many Flute methods and exercise books also published by Alphonse Leduc, such as Gammes et Arpèges (1933), Exercices Journaliers (1922) and Mécanisme-Chromatisme (1927). His methods are widely used and recognised worldwide.â€.

â€Small Suite for Flute and Piano is a piece written for the Paris Conservatoire contest by Pierre Petit. Really melodious, it lasts eight minutes and is divided into three distinct movements. The first part, ?Gai et allant? is quite fast and has to be played joyfully. It uses the whole range of the instrument with some really high notes and includes a Cadenza. The second part, ?Lent et très chanté?, is slower, slightly lower in range and really melodious. It is quite short compared to the other parts. The third and final movement has the same kind of range as the first one. Fast, it features a part to be played at Marzuka tempo and one to be played at the same tempo than the beginning. The piece ends on a really high trill. Small Suite is really enjoyable to play and to listen to. It however requires some strong skills in terms of technique and sonority that would be acquired by advanced players: the difficulty is therefore rated at 7.“.

The present work 'Pantomime' by Paul Hindemith, now available as a separate edition for the first time, comes from his opera 'Cardillac', performed in 1926 for the first time, a musical setting of the mysterious crime story about the goldsmith of the same name from the novella 'Das Fraulein von Scuderi' by E.T.A. Hoffmann. Act I of the opera contains a mimed scene, accompanied by two solo flutes and orchestra. The present edition contains the dialogue of the flutes, rich in gesture, and the reduced orchestra version as piano version. The expressive dialogue of the equal solo flutes is reminiscent of the characteristic music of the silent film. Our separate edition shall make the piece known among flutists and add to the contemporary flute repertoire.

The most important prerequisite for success in studying the instrument is the ability to practise in a meaningful and rational manner - i. e. to aim at a steady progress through regular and purposeful application, with the least possible expenditure of time and energy. One can only be sure of making improvement when one practises daily, and as one improves so confidence grows and there is a proper basis for success. In this connection it should always be noted that the choice and the demands of individual exercises in respect of range and difficulty of technique and musicality should refer to the standard attained at the relevant time. In the whole curriculum the study has a very important place. In that it is by way of being and exercise, it deals with particular problems of playing in different compositional guises, and shows the necessary link between purely technical and mechanical matter and the literature (including that for concert use) of the instrument. When beginning work on a study the first thing to do is to determine the central problem posed by the composer. For this reason the study should first be read through so that the contents may be grasped and the transference of notes into sound as far as possible be accomplished. Breathing marks are to be put in at appropriate places. Then the study can be played through in slow time, with exact control of all the parts of the body involved in order to avoid inexactness.76 etudes for daily practice.
