Dedicated to Demarre McGill, Principal Flute, Seattle Symphony OrchestraFlute Duration: 6' Composed: 2020 Published by: Subito Music Publishing PROGRAM NOTE: The year 2020 has definitely been a very challenging year with many upheavals. During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.

?Ruffling feathers by Michaël Levinas is a piece for Flute in which the player reproduces the sound of ruffling feathers. With no degree of difficulty given, the player still requires the mastery of some techniques learnt in the intermediate level and above. Quite challenging, it differentiates itself from classical pieces due to the presence of many effects: trills, glissandos, fast rhythms, sound of the tongue. A guide of all the effects present in this piece appears at the end of the book. Michaël Levinas (born in 1949) was the student of the Olivier Messiaen.andrdquo.

This is a set of studies for flute in jazz style. Each of the pieces is based loosely on the blues: that is, it has a twelve bar theme on a chord sequence which is a regular jazz blues or a modified version of it. To offer some novelty and challenge I have chosen to use a variety of musical elements, some at the limit of mainstream jazz language: such as whole tone scales and quartal arpeggios, with the aim of giving each study a peculiarity, hence the title of this collection: 'Odd Blues'. It is hoped that these studies may offer a source of stimuli to the jazz flute improviser and also serve as performance pieces. Each study presents the theme twice, with some slight reinterpretation on the repeat, two choruses of written out 'solo' and a reprise of the theme with a finale. Geoff Warren, 2016.

“Composed by Makoto Shinohara, Kassouga is a piece for advanced Flute players, accompanied by a Piano. This work lasts 6 minutes and is dedicated to Hirohiko Kato. Very difficult, the first section of the piece slowly but expressively and includes a Cadenza by the Flute solo. The second part is then introduced, fast, energetic and rhythmic, before another Cadenza by the Solo Flute, leading to the end of the work finishing really harmoniously. It is a melodious work that is relatively challenging and could be played in recitals or for contests. Makoto Shinohara is a Japanese composer from Osaka. He studied in France with Olivier Messiaen and Tony Aubin and in Germany with Bernd Alois Zimmermann and Gottfried Koenig. He wrote some Orchestral pieces, some chambre music some electronic music and some works for traditional Japanese instruments.â€.

“Entertainment, composed by Raymond Gallois Montbrun is a piece for Flute and Piano. Written for the Contest of the Paris Conservatoire, it was dedicated to Gaston Crunelle, a French professor at the Paris Conservatoire. Quite challenging, this piece is perfect for advanced students and would work well for a contest or a recital. It features mild chromaticisms, changes of meters and rapid legato triplets and sounds very romantic. Raymond Gallois Montbrun (1918-1994) was a French violinist and composer who won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome and the Grand Prix de Paris. He later became the director of the Paris Conservatoire. He composed many symphonic pieces, an opera, a quartet and many pieces for Solo Piano, Violin and Piano and other instruments.â€.

“With music for Flute Quartets being most commonly rearranged for the ensemble, it is unusual that a work is originally composed for that precise instrumentation. It is for that reason that Pierre Max Dubois' Quatuor for Flutes has been considerably well-received. As a student of Darius Milhaud, Dubois brought ideas of Les Six, of which Milhaud was a member, into the mid-1900s. Dubois' compositions are characteristically light with interesting and unusual harmonic and melodic textures, as conveyed in this Quatuor for Flutes. With all four parts being technically demanding, exploiting extended techniques to the maximum, this piece provides a challenging but enjoyable performance. Moreover, including a full score and separate parts, this edition is ideal. With few pieces for this instrumentation exisitng as original compositions, all Flute Quartets must ensure they try out Dubois' enticing four-movement piece. â€.
