The instantly recognisable and ever-popular Méditation, from the opera Tha s by Jules Massenet (1842-1912), remains a strong favourite in the classical repertoire, superbly arranged for Flute and Piano by French flautist, PaulTaffanel. Massenet first studied music with his mother before entering the Paris Conservatoire. He is best known for his operas, of which he composed over thirty. Tha s was first performed at the Opéra Garnier in Paris in 1894and continues to be one of the composer's most performed operas. The famous Méditation, is an intermezzo, originally for Violin and Orchestra, which has since been arranged for many different instruments, making it a frequentconcert piece. The arrangement for Flute and Piano remains in the original key of D major and displays the passionate religious intentions. Taffanel's adaptions include breath marks, phrasing, changing octaves for some notes andarticulation, among other aspects. The theme itself is very resolute; it is order appearing from the pandemonium. Conflict returns, and order and chaos become less distinguishable from one another, and soon fuse together. However, order returns with new meaning, synthesized with previous musical content, creating a truer, deeper sense of awareness or understanding. A moment of ambiguity arises, but the flute persists, supported by the sensitive but firm figuration in the piano, and resoundingly comes to a close, unburdened and at ease.

Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) studied at the Paris Conservatoire before embarking upon a successful composing career. Stories increased his popularity when it was published in the mid-1920s and Marcel Moyse (1889-1984), a prominent French flautist, arranged the compilation for flute and piano in 1933 to great acclaim. Roope Mäenpää's Sonata for flute and piano (2020) was composed on a small island Utö in the Archipelago Sea (in the Baltic Sea). Isolated from his normal environment the composer didn't find so much peace or harmony as insecurity and introversion. These sensations of otherness, together with an intensive creative project, left a diary-like mark on the sonata. It is commissioned by and dedicated to Sami Junnonen and Tuomas Turriago.Roope Mäenpää (b. 1990) is a Finnish composer and musician based in Tampere. Mäenpää’s oeuvre includes orchestral and chamber music, and his works have been performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Tampere Philharmonic and the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. He has also worked in close collaboration with the TamperRaw contemporary music ensemble. Mäenpää has composed two musical fairytales for narrator and orchestra: Hipinäaasi apinahiisi (2019-20) and the Insect Symphony (2021), which he conducted in 2022 at the concert by the Tampere Philharmonic. The symphony is a valuable addition to children’s culture and an exciting work which sets out to explore nature through the miraculous world of little organisms.

Allegretto for flute and piano by Jozef Swider is a work of a great artistic value that comprises a perfect didactic material, filling a gap in the Polish flute literature. Allegretto for flute and piano is a one-part composition of an ABA1 structure with a cadenza. A four-bar piano introduction developsinto the flute part intoning a dance and folk-style melody, which becomes fragmented in terms of rhythm and densified in its facture. The dialogue between the flute and the piano involves mutual motif complementation. The melody gathers momentum (numerous ascending and descending progressions, undulations, typical ties, trills), a dynamic gradation develops into the middle, more peaceful and cantilena-style, part. The culmination, initially outlined by the flute and continued by the piano, leads to the cadenza characterised by considerable performative freedom across motifs in parts A and B, exhibiting the colour and sound values ofthe instrument. The link A1 comprises a quasi-variation development of the first passage of the work; it is the most dynamic,energetic and diversified in terms of the applied sound registers (characteristic alloctava marking), articulation and agogics. Themarking piu vivo in bar 136, combined with irregular metric divisions and shifts in accents, intensified dynamics and expression adds spontaneity, ultimately leading to the work's finale. The application of the minor mode, the economy of expressive means and a changeable course of narration reflect introvert characteristics of the composer a man of outstanding humbleness and modesty, at the same time full of unrest, self-criticism and little faith towards himself, which is confirmed by recently found notes of his.

Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) was a popular, very creative composer of his age. His oeuvre consists of nine operas, sixty-six symphonies, forty-two string quartets, eighteen string trios, eleven piano trios, five piano quintets, serenades and ecclesiastical works. He composed especially numerous chamber music works for flute in various arrangements (duets, trios, quartets, quintets etc.). Out of his twenty-four flute concertos the one hereby published is marked No. 18 in the catalogue of Hoffmesiter's works, published in 1800. (A copy of that catalogue has been preserved at the Belgian Royal Library, Brussels.) The contemporary handwritten orchestral part-material ofthe concerto is to be found at the King Stephen Museum at Szekesfehervar, it had got there in 1951 as part of the music collection of the family Verebi-Vegh. Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) ist einer der beliebten und fruchtbaren Komponisten seiner Zeit. From 1906 on Béla Bartók was collecting folksongs on a regular basis. It was in 1907, during his first collecting trip to Transylvania, that he jotted down those three melodies in Gyergyóteker patak, Cs k, which he both provided with piano accompaniment (From Gyergyó) and arranged for solo piano (Three Hungarian Folksongs from Cs k) in the same year. The melodies were played by a ''sixty-year old man'' on a peasant flute. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respectthe strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.
