The cycle of suites for flute and basso continuo, Op. 5 is J.-M. Hotteterre's second important set of works in this genre. The first published as Op. 2 has a special significance in the history of music and for performing practice. The composer added namely to the second edition of the work sufficient information concerning ornamentation and performance. (For the modern critical edition of Op. 2 see volume Z. 13901 of the Urtext Series of EMB.) Hotteterre's Op. 5 published in the present edition is an organic continuation of Op. 2. This fact was also emphasized by the composer himself who entitled them ''Premier Livre'' and ''Deuxiéme Livre' on publication. The ornamentsand directions for performance occur here just as copiously as in the revised edition of ''Premier Livre''. Op. 5, ein Zyklus für Flöte und Basso continuo von J.-M. Hotteterre ist die zweite bedeutende Reihe des Komponisten in dieser Gattung. Die erste, die als Op. 2 erschien, erfreut sich besonderer musikgeschichtlichen und aufführungstechnischen Wichtigkeit, da der Komponist ihre zweite Ausgabe mit zahlreichen Anmerkungen zur Verzierung und Vortragsweise ergänzte. Even though Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), admittedly, was no fan of the flute, he wrote unforgettable music for this instrument 'that I can't stand': two concertos, a double concerto with harp, the original version of the Wind Concertante and the four flute quartets. Commissioned by the Dutch physician and amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean, Mozart wrote his two solo concertos in 1777/78 during a stay in Mannheim. As the middle movement of the Concerto in G major KV 313 supposedly was too difficult for the client -with regard to the playing technique and/or music - the composer wrote an alternative version, 'Andante' KV 315 (285e). This nice individual movement is now presented in a carefully edited new edition, with a cadenza of the editor - a serenade-like setting that offers the soloist many possibilities for cantabile playing.

F.A. Rosler (Antonio Rosetti), a Bohemian by birth, worked as court music director in Ludwigslust/Mecklenburg. He wrote 14 flute concertos altogether the most important of which is the concerto G major, Op. 14. The expanded head movement combines the sonata form with the ritornello technique of the concerto grosso. Right at the beginning, the basses of the Mannheimer-Walzermotiv make it clear that Rosler knows how to use effectively the orchestral technique of his time. Despite all motivic and thematic as well as harmonic abundance, Rosler achieves in this concerto an almost natural musical unity.
