Jozef (Jef) Schampaert's 1952 Notturno e Danza (Nocturne and Danse) for flute and piano, written as a concours piece for the Royal Conservatoire Antwerp in Belgium, is a bit of a curious beast. While the rest of the Belgian school was experimenting with a return to lush romanticism (Alpaerts, Maes, and the musical progeny of Benoit), or beginning to prod the tonal bounds of listenable 12-tone and serialism (Constant and Verbesselt), Schampaert took towards a different sound: that of the Impressionists, transmuted through his distinctly Flemish touch. The Nocturne and Danse is no exception. The core of the Nocturne is a relatively straightforward melody, but it's quickly pulled apart into Debussyian fragments and melodic cells - a rhapsody in miniature, with touches of Ibert's stranger runs and figures through. The Danse retains a clearer sense of melody, but one that's even closer to Debussy and Ravel - grace notes and intertwined, changing runs are integral melodic material, by turns dark then playful. A small cadenza again touches on a sense of Ibert before the piece is brought to a quiet close.

As a confirmed Mozartian it is natural that Müller's concertos for flute and orchestra should follow the classical pattern, and the E minor work published here for the first time since 1801 is an attractive and virtuoso piece in the less usual minor tonality. It is edited by Nikolai Jaeger and Christopher Hogwood with a useful introduction including points of performance practice drawn from Müller’s flute tutor. This work is a reworking of the music written by Nino Rota for the film of the same name by Federico Fellini, Oscar winner in 1957. In 1967 Rota composed the music for the ballet La strada for the Teatro alla Scala, in collaboration with the choreographer Mario Pistoni, where Carla Fracci was expected to play the role of Gelsomina. This show has always remained alive in my memory since in those years I began the profession of flutist at La Scala, where I also had the opportunity to perform ballet. The transcription traces the salient moments of the plot, highlighted by the captions taken from the original score. Free of virtuosity, so appreciated by the flutists, it is conceived with the intention of restoring the dramaturgical tension of the Fellini-Rota masterpiece. (C. Tabarelli).

As sources for this present edition served the manuscript marked Mus. ms. Bach St. 296 held in the Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz at Berlin. The original title reads: Sonata / a / Flauto Traverso / e / Cembalo Concertato / di / J. C. Bach. Our edition follows closely the manuscript except for the arrangement according to present-day notation (use of accidentals, the addition of slurs to tie the appoggiatura to the main note, etc.). Obvious errors are listed in the Critical Notes. Slurs have been but in square brackets. The basso continuo marked in the original by figuring is given here in small print.
