Vous trouverez, à la fin de cette méthode, une bibliographie donnant les références des meilleurs ouvrages sur la question. Il faut rappeler cependant, que depuis le début du XXe siècle, la guitare est, avant le piano ou l'harmonica, l'instrument de prédilection des bluesmen. Entre 1910 et 1940, de très nombreux guitaristes noirs, originaires pour la plupart des États du Sud des USA, ont contribué à la naissance et à l'expansion du blues, phénomène musical d'une portée incontestable et incontestée. Les guitaristes de blues acoustique qui ont enregistré surtout entre 1926 et 1940, avant que ne se répande l'utilisation de l'amplification électrique, ont jeté les bases du finger picking et, pour certains, porté ce style, guitaristiquement très complet, à un très haut niveau de technicité et de virtuosité. Chacun de ces guitaristes avait sa technique particulière, sa couleur, reconnaissables soit à la manière de frapper les basses, soit au phrasé mélodique, etc... De plus, certaines régions ont vu se développer, de par la personnalité marquante de quelques musiciens locaux, des styles relativement typés. C'est ainsi que l'on peut parler du blues du Mississipi, du Texas, de Memphis, de la Côte Est, de Chicago, etc... Dans cette méthode, dont le but est de vous permettre l'approche des différents styles de blues acoustique, je ne me baserai pas sur cette classification traditionnelle mais plus simplement sur les différentes manières de marquer les rythmes en blues sur une guitare. En effet, le finger picking, qui permet de jouer en même temps, comme sur un piano, le rythme et la mélodie, était la technique employée par les guitaristes de blues. Les façons d'utiliser le pouce de la main droite, pour l'accompagnement sont multiples et à chacune correspond un style, une couleur particulière. Dans cet ouvrage d'initiation, je me suis attaché aux principales manières d'utiliser les basses dans différentes tonalités. Je pense qu'elles couvrent l'essentiel des techniques utilisées. Le guitariste qui assimilera les exercices proposés ici, sera à même, ensuite, d'approfondir tel ou tel style plus précis. Je propose également quelques exemples de blues en accord ouvert (open tuning) et de blues au bottleneck, ces techniques ayant été très largement utilisées par de nombreux bluesmen. Je vous propose 17 blues dans des styles et des tonalités différents. Chacun de ces blues est joué à la manière de certains guitaristes parmi les plus représentatifs du blues acoustique. En introduction à chaque blues, je présente un exercice, une phrase courte, dont la répétition vous permettra de maîtriser les principales difficultés du morceau. Un CD contenant tous les exercices accompagne cette méthode. Écoutez le attentivement jusqu'à ce que votre oreille en soit imprégnée. On ne peut bien jouer que la musique qui chante dans notre tête. Night Dance was written between September 1986 and January 1987 to a commission from David Starobin who gave the first performance on 5 April 1987 at the Wigmore Hall London. It is a miniature tone-poem depicting ascene of an old man sitting in a doorway at dusk. He is playing a guitar and begins by plucking the lowest string as though searching for what he wishes to play. As the music gains momentum it gradually moves upwards by meansof the guitar’s open strings and breaks into a dance. Now it is dark and a nightmarish band of dancers passes by the old guitarist. The dance jerky and uneven develops melodically and harmonically the initial material of thepiece. After a climax the dancers move on - the dance music subsides and a nocturne is heard interrupted periodically by the music of the dance in the distance. Maybe this is not geographical distance but the distance oftime perhaps the whole episode has been mere memories. The piece ends musingly with the motive from which it began.
