In September of 2018, guitarist, Toby McWilliams commissioned Cruz to write a three-movement guitar solo after hearing his Five Pieces in C on the internationally syndicated radio show, Classical Guitar Alive. McWilliams requested the first movement to be in sonata-allegro form followed by two other pieces that reflect the tempo choices of a typical three-movement sonatina. As is the case with most of Cruzâs music, this Sonatina was completed as music written for musicâs sake. However, in his quest to find titles other than tempo markings, Cruz plucked three words from the correspondence between himself and McWilliams that together, add a personal touch to the collection while suggesting a progression of an imaginary dayâs events.A point of interest in the first movement, A theme: Cruz begins on the IV chord and intentionally avoids using a proper I chord throughout. While the B section does begin in the dominant key, it moves quickly towards a D major tonal center.Festival (3rd movement) uses a bitonal opening theme: E major in the top voice while the bass line uses E minor.

Pierrot, or Harlequin? (2023) is based on stock characters from the Italian commedia dellâarte tradition. Columbina has a choice of partner â Pierrot, or Harlequin? Or maybe she will select neither of them. In this set of triple variations, Pierrot and Harlequin compete for Columbina's attention and favour. Pierrot is deep, quiet, thoughtful, and loving, but sometimes melancholic. Harlequin is light-hearted, extrovert, and fun to be with, but somewhat shallow and brash. Columbina herself is coquettish, impulsive, and unpredictable. How will the story end between these imperfect characters? The performer gets to select one of three possible endings as the piece nears its conclusion.Pierrot, or Harlequin? was commissioned by the International Guitar Festival Homenaje 2023. The premiere was given by Giacomo Susani at Barco Teatro, Padova, Italy, on 10th November 2023.Pierrot, or Harlequin? Davide Anzaghi: SegovianaAndrea Cappelli: Corpo e animaFabio Luppi: Rondò delle quarteGian Paolo Luppi: Bagatelle per Andrés SegoviaMarco Reghezza: Fughetta sulle corde vuoteAlessandro Spazzoli: Preludio CoraleRoberto Tagliamacco: Homenaje a SegoviaPaolo Ugoletti: Omaggio a SegoviaOne outstanding feature of Andrés Segoviaâ??s artistic activity was the systematic way in which he commissioned new works from leading composers who were not guitarists. This highly original initiative proved to have historic consequences for the emancipation of the guitar from the rather provincial milieu of aficionados in which it was confined, enabling it to emerge as a major protagonist in its own right on the international music scene. To mark the 25th anniversary of his passing (1987-2012) I asked some composers to write a piece paying tribute to Andrés Segovia. Most responded with enthusiasm and I was able to perform their tributes to Segovia in the concerts honouring the memory of the Maestro I held in 2012 â?? in venues including the Ravenna Festival, the Ateneo in Madrid, the Royal Academy of Music, London, and the Meeting in Rimini, as well as many others. In my turn I dedicate this volume, containing a selection of these pieces, to the memory of the Maestro. The volume is undoubtedly enhanced by the inclusion of two further tributes to Segovia, both produced to accompany concerts I gave in 2012: a poem by Davide Rondoni and a portrait of Segovia by Roberto Casadio.(Piero Bonaguri).

Preface I Programme Note TENEBRAE was commissioned by the Turku (Abo) Music Festival and composed for Finnish guitarist Timo Korhonen, whom I had known and admired for a long time. Timo gave a brillant premiere of TENEBRAE in Turku on August 13, 1991 and has played it several times since then. The title is Latin, and means darkness or gloom, but it also refers to the Roman Catholic matins and lauds services in Holy Week. These are held as dusk falls, and the idea is that the sixteen candles that are burning at the beginning of the service are gradually extinguished until, after sixteenprayers, the church is in darkness. The same development is carried through inTENEBRAE by musical means, so that we have not yet had to resort to acandlelit setting - although it is by no means out of the question. The piece makes extensive use of the guitar's properties for revealing quiet, intimate feelings, although naturally in a work of this scope there is contrasting material included. Vals d'la Masca; Il racconto della Montagna; Sequenze sotterraneeThe Alpinia Suite was commissioned and composed for the festival <> and is dedicated to my friend and colleague Elio Galvagno. It was performed for the first time on August 30, 2011, in the Church of San Giovanni in Saluzzo, by an ensemble of professional and student guitarists from all over Europe. This piece was written to commemorate the first ascent of mount Monviso, by William Mathews, Frederick Jacomb, Jean Baptiste Croz and Michel Croz, exactly 150 years before, on August 30, 1861.The first movement is a small Waltz. I imagined a Masca (a sort of alpine pixie, a teasing sprite), dancing all around the house and playing tricks, mostly harmless and funny. The Masca is a legendary and very important character in the folklore of my valleys, and all rationally inexplicable events of everyday life are ascribed to her - such as objects that cannot be found anymore, holes in flour sacks, salt in sugar bowls...The next two movements are a homage to the Mountains. The Tale is a sort of journal, a bright and peaceful chronicle of a hike uphill, in which the beauty of the place is highlighted by an easy harmony and a sweet melody. After this, Underground sequences evokes that same world in a darker and nocturnal way; the faster pace and the choice of repeated and varying patterns are meant to show the transformation of the former environment into something more complex and tormented. Here mountains are a metaphor of human life, warts and all: their sundrenched slopes and their green pasture grasslands, but also their icy and dangerous northern sides, which demand calm, training and caution.(G. Signorile).
