The works Johann Sebastian Bach devoted to the lute and to the Lautenwerk (BWV 995, 996, 997, 998, 999, 1000 and 1006a) have for a long time now become part of the guitar repertoire and remain a cornerstone in the study programmes of conservatories and of higher academies around the world, recognizing that this music of absolute importance has a very significant weight in the training of todayâ??s musician and guitarist. The intention of this transcription for guitar is to provide a teaching aid which faithfully reproduces the articulations, slurs, agogics and embellishments present in the manuscripts and at the same time offers advice on how to achieve them and suggests a practical fingering for both hands.

In this book, guitarist and music historian David Grimes presents 20 â??small sonatasâ? or sonatinas, complete with detailed performance notes and bio sketches of each of the contributing composers: Leonhard von Call, Matteo Carcassi, Ferdinando Carulli, Mauro Giuliani, Francesco Molino, and Antonio Nava. While flexible, the early 19th-century sonatina form usually consists of 2 - 4 contrasting movements, here in guitar-friendly keys, making these pieces ideal for performance by intermediate-level students. In all but the most challenging passages, Grimes has intentionally kept fingering to a minimum to allow students to form their own concept of this critical skill. Then, as many bass notes in these pieces are played on open strings, the player must develop a sense of when to selectively damp dissonant tones or observe a restâ?? exposing and overcoming yet another shortcoming in the education of many guitarists.  Most classic guitar teachers are familiar with the easy didactic studies by Carcassi, Carulli and Giuliani; Favorite Sonatinas offers more highly developed, but not yet virtuoso pieces by the same Italian triumvirateâ?? plus three more composers in a similar veinâ?? promoting confident, enjoyable sight-reading by guitarists of all levels. .

The first impulse to compose these 3 Little Suites for Guitar came from the desire to offer very young students compositions not framed by the usual features of â??music for childrenâ?? but, rather, meant to introduce into their musical horizon sonorities, rhythms, and expressive modalities not generally experienced in the more â??traditionalâ?? courses of study. As the compositions developed, the project underwent some slight modifications, so that in the end one could say that the three suites became progressively more difficult, though remaining, in their deep essence, quite â??simpleâ??.I would recommend paying careful attention to the titles of the pieces and to the expressive markings. Although it was not my intention to write â??descriptiveâ?? music, I have tried to handle these pieces like stage scripts, giving each a specific â??characterâ??. For this purpose my long experience as a composer of theatre music has been very helpful. It would give me great satisfaction if guitarists of every age would enjoy performing these suites. I would like teachers to find in them cues for proposing to their pupils further refinements concerning both technique and expression, never forgetting how inexpressible music truly is.(Carlo de Nonno).

Written on the suggestion of guitarist David Starobin as a 'tiny dance-like movement to go along with similar bagatelles from all over the world'. Norgard's intention was that this piece should be performed after the piece 'Daggry', which is based on a poem by Henrich Nordbrandt. For Guitar solo.

A unique view of Llobet, as a champion and arranger of Sor. The Sor studies reproduced in facsimile are from Llobet's own library. In an interview in Barcelona in 1929, which is reproduced in full in this edition, Llobet announced his intention of preparing a new edition of the Sor studies. Judging by the density of his marking and copious added and altered fingering in this facsimile edition, he seemed in fact to be doing just this. Unfortunately, a new edition edited by him never came to fruition! We have prepared our facsimile edition of these later printings of Simrock editions (a gift from Erwin Schwarz-Reiflingen in 1928), carefully restoring the originals to make these pages clearer, so that not only is everything more legible, but most importantly, all of Llobet´s fingerings and amendments are clearly legible. In this volume dedicated to Sor, we have re-engraved for inclusion here all 6 of Llobet's very fine Sor transcriptions from La Guitarra in Argentina, fingered and arranged by Llobet.
