Kai Nieminen's Northern Spells for solo guitar is a unique combination of Northern mystique, nature and age-old rituals. The mood of the opening Invocation and Spell is shrouded in mystery dotted with moments of brightness, and chant-like rhythmic passages. As its name suggests, the second movement, Atmosfera, is atmospheric and airy, reiterating a melody that creates an image of something ancient and distant. The recurring pentatonic figures in the closing Charm conjure forth a rhythmic and at times even lithe conclusion. Strong contrasts are one of the hallmarks of Nieminen's music, and this work is no exception. The guitarist must have a consummate ability to extract specific tones and effects from his or her instrument in order to bring out the required nuances and sometimes even ritualistic moods. One special feature of the work is the damped sound made in the bass by gently pressing the string with the left-hand finger near the nut. This produces a muffled, mystic, drum-like sound that has to be rounded, altogether resonant and ear-catching. Throughout all the movements and moods of this work, the player has to choose the timbres very carefully. The performance must be as imposing and multidimensional as the arctic nature that allows Northern spells to reawaken in the present-day world.

See the biography of Michael Karmon on the back cover.WHEN THE SHEEP WON'T COME: A SLEEPLESS NOCTURNE FOR GUITAR was composed for Joseph Hagedorn, winner of the 1990 GFA solo competition, and premiered by him in November 1999. My original idea was to write a serene and moody nocturne in several movements. However, as I began researching and listening to new guitar pieces, I came across Toru Takemitsu's All in Twilight, and it immediately made a profound impression. At the time I found it beautiful, moving, and inspiring, but I also felt I didn't have anything to add to what Takemitsu already did, and that I needed to find a new concept for my piece. So, I decided to view night as a potentially restless time, rather than a serene time, and portray states of mind one might go through during a sleepless night. The names of the movements evoke, at least in my mind, the moods I am to depict, and the piece becomes progressively more convoluted as it goes on. By the end, the music is a surreal and weary shadow of the opening.

Olli Koskelin's then when A-go (2022) for guitar was premiered by Otto Tolonen, to whom the nine-minute work is dedicated. This product is a B4 sized folder, sheet music (performance score) enclosed as loose pages.Olli Koskelin's (born 16 April 1955) compositional output reflects a wide range of interests. The vast area covered by his style encompasses the neo-impressionism of the piano work Courbures (1989) to the post-expressionist echoes of his Music for String Quartet (1981) as well as the breakneck virtuosity of his clarinet piece Exalte (1985/1991) and the rich romantic textures of his orchestral piece ... like a planet silently breathing... (1993). He often uses the overtone series like the French spectral composers and avoids dramatic culmination. Soft harmonics, tranquil arching melodies, a leisurely rhythmical pulse and a coherence of mood are in evidence in his later works as in Uurre (1997) for chamber ensemble, Miniatures (1997) for string quartet and Circles within for 19 solo strings.

â??I already wrote the Concerto for Guitar, Tympani and Strings for the outstanding Polish guitarist Lukasz Kuropaczewski. The 'Triptych' for guitar solo is my second work for this interpreter. The individual titles of the 'Triptych' movements â?? Fantasia, Aria and Impromptu furioso â?? refer to the characters of the individual movements. I completed 'Triptych' for guitar solo in December 2014. The piece is permeated by double contrasts: in terms of harmony, the guitar's own mood and sound world are contrasted with my harmonic thinking. In terms of technique, on the other hand, performance gestures of the Flamenco tradition are contrasted with those of the practice of classical guitar playing. The dialogue between different harmonic and historical levels can thus be discovered through a complex, clearly demarcated discourse. The performance duration of the work is about 15 minutes.â? (Krzysztof Meyer).
