A free and ethereal opening gives way to hurried, almost desperate sixteenth notes in this masterwork from Hart Morris, written in honor of Fred Gramann. A syncopated melody ensues, accompanied the entire time by the same frantic sixteenth notes. The mood gradually slows and becomes more hymn-like before the emergence of a final, triumphal verse of the hymntune LOBE DEN HERREN (Praise to the Lord, the Almighty). A grand challenge for any advanced choir looking to showcase their talents.

Not at all for the feint of heart, Michael Helman's three-movement masterwork is a true tour de force for your ensemble. The piece opens with the Exaltation, which alternates between a stately Baroque feel and a more modern syncopated rhythm, creating an atmosphere both old and new. This segues to the gentle Reflection, set in a lilting 9/8 time, which then gives way to the driving rhythms of the Dance, set primarily in a minor 7/8 time, but with occasional measures in 6/8, 3/8, and 4/4 thrown in for good measure. An outstanding musical statement for your advanced ensemble!

From the talented pen of Sandra Eithun comes another fantastic transcription of a well-know piece from classical literature, this one from Leo Delibes' Lakme. Flowing sixteenth notes and deep, sonorous bass lines create a truly magnificent tonal experience. Delicate plucks and malleted notes appear throughout, replicating pizzicato string notes to great effect. A true masterwork, and a brilliant addition to the advanced handbell literature. The recording is a live performance of the Kalamazoo Ringers under the direction of Janet Van Valey.

The Butterfly in English, this transcription of Edvard Grieg's composition is a flutter with chromatic runs in 16th rhythms. Beautiful but it requires a lot of work for the more advanced choir.
