As a student of famous harpist Lily Laskine, Denise Mégevand (1917-2004) received high quality musical education and was significantly instrumental in the revival of the Celtic Harp. She compiled numerous, prolific books for theinstrument, Play and Learn the Celtic Harp being no exception. The Celtic Harp characteristically has metal strings, and is notoriously challenging to play. However, Mégevand's Play and Learn the Celtic Harp provides excellentand clear instruction to progression on the instrument. The book addresses general principles of the Celtic Harp, intervals, arpeggios, chords and scales, as well as including 13 pieces. For all aspiring players of the CelticHarp, Mégevand's Play and Learn the Celtic Harp provides excellent insight and instruction for beginners.

Greek mythology seems spontaneously to have offered the figure of linos as the central character in a work for solo harp. (Linos was a poet, believed to be the brother of Orpheus, and according to Greek tradition no greater musician ever appeared among mankind.) The musical material, conforming to the characteristics of the harp, consits of two interesting seven-degree note rows incorporating all the possible pedal combinations, their mirror inversions and the five-degree noterows that fit between them. The nine-section composition is made up of scenes from the imagined life of Linos, an imagined 'Linos's hymn', and laments played in his honour.

Tarascone; Tarantella Capuanese; Valzer; Polka di Vittorio; Tarantella StiglianeseThe history of the Viggianesi, strolling musicians, winds over a period of about four centuries and esprimeun ‘unicum’ musically and anthropologically. Heirs of a travelling musical tradition that from the late Middle Ages inhabited more than just the streets of the Kingdom of Sicily and Naples, the harpists of this extraordinary story made their first appearances as early as the end of the 1600s engaged in musical practices at shrines.Armed with an urgent need to make a living together with a strong musical inclination, adaptability and versatility, the groups of musicians, almost always belonging to the same family circle, became the promoters of the great Italian musical tradition (Southern in particular), and with their harps on their shoulders they became the identification symbol of a well-defined and limited area of Italy: the Agri Valley, in Basilicata. From the many documents examined, a very wide and varied musical repertoire emerges mixing the pastoral tradition with classical tradition (mainly opera, devotional music with songs from the cities (from the Neapolitan tradition to international production). The pastoral repertoire, the subject of this publication, consists of a strongly characterized native repertoire which the Viggianesi had consolidated in both public and private ritual occasions in their native land, even if performing in distant lands. This collection is included among the compulsory pieces of The 7th International Harp Contest in Italy Suoni D’Arpa, 2017, Category A – Associazione Italiana dell’Arpa – www.associazioneitalianarpa.it

Whizzing, growling and rattling – you can produce all kinds of sounds with the harp, not just the fairy-tale shimmer and glissandos that you first think of. Lotta Wennäkoski composed Sigla for harp and orchestra (2021-2022) in close collaboration with the harpist Sivan Magen, to whom the concerto is dedicated. The title of the concerto, Sigla, has different meanings in different languages. In Italian, it means a jingle; in Icelandic, it means sailing; and in Tagalog, spoken in the Philippines, it means vivaciousness or enthusiasm. Wennäkoski has not specifically referenced these in the movements of the concerto as such, but she does allow that the various meanings of the word may be identified with the music according to the listener’s perception. The recording of the work (Ondine ODE1420-2) was premiered with the Gramophone award as the the best release in the contemporary category in October 2023.This product is the solo part. The orchestral material is available for hire from the publisher.Duration: 19'Instrumentation:Harp solo – equipped with paint brush, tuning key and a plastic hair clip2 Flutes (2nd doubling piccolo)2 Oboes2 Clarinets in Bb2 Bassoons2 Horns in F2 Trumpets in C – trumpets and trombone doubling an egg slicerBass trombone attached to a piece of wood or a flat cardboard boxPercussion (2 players)Percussion I: crotales, vibraphone, 5 gongs (a#, bn, c’, e’, f’), bass drum, cymbal, guiro, bell tree, shell chimes, whip, lion’s roar and different beaters including a bow, superball stck and wire brushesPercussion II: tam-tam, cymbal, snare drum, 2 cowbells, 2 temple blocks (med/lg), triangle (small/med), vibraslap and different beaters including a bow, wire brushes and superball stickPiano – equipped with a plectrum, wire brushes and 2 soft percussion beatersStrings.

Melodia for Solo Harp/ Alleluja Modo II - Wachet auf for Harp and OrganThis publication gathers together in these three pieces the only compositions by Santucci devoted to the harp, both as a solo instrument and in dialogue with the organ, his favourite instrument. The little Melodia per arpa, a simple piece having an apparently didactic purpose, does not show the date of composition but, judging by the handwriting of the manuscript, it probably dates back to the period between 1980 and 1990. No other information has reached us as to why the piece was composed. The two pieces Alleluja Modo II and Wachet auf, both dated 20 March 1993, composed for the unusual duo of harp and organ, are dedicated to Anna Maria Restani, first harp in the orchestra of the Teatro Comunale of Bologna from 1965 to 2002, and to her son Wladimir Matesic, organist and now teacher at the Conservatoire in Trieste. Gregorian chant is the protagonist of the first piece, evoking a Gothic and rarefied atmosphere. The second is instead a blatant tribute to Johann Sebastian Bach (right from the first bars the reference to Prelude no. 1 of the Well-Tempered Clavier is clear), through one of his most famous chorales (Wachet auf, ruft uns die stimme), also used by Santucci for numerous other compositions, including Il corteo dei Magi [for trumpet, organ, orchestra and choir, 1986, ms.], still performed in the Christmas concerts in Bologna. Written by Francois Joseph Naderman (1781-1835), Sonatinas Progressive, Op. 92 consists of a series of seven small sonatas. The level of difficulty alternates between intermediate and advanced as these can be played at different speeds but necessitates some strong technique as well as some pedal changes. These Sonatinas Progressive, Op. 92 are still considered as some of the most famous pieces of the harp repertoire today. Francois Joseph Naderman was a classical harpist, composer and teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. His vocation was developed by growing up as the son of a Luthier harp maker. He also wrote Sonatas for harp, harp and cello, studies and other pieces.

Johannes Snoer is not one of the most remembered harpists today, but his didactic work was really important and can still be useful today. For didactic purposes, he also published collections of simple pieces by great composers transcribed for harp.Among his transcriptions there is the Adagio from Sonata n. 5 in C minor, op. 10 no. 1, by Ludwig van Beethoven, subject of this edition. The original musical text has been left unchanged, only the ornamentation has been written in full and the harp fingerings and indications relating to the movement of the pedals have been added. The work brings the dedication to Mr. H. Rutters, probably a relative of his wife Antoinette.

Although the composer Thierry Pecou mostly does without experimental playing techniques, an exemplary modern harp sound emerges from among soft whispering sounds and massive chord clusters. Tone colours associatively modelled on the sparkling green of jade crystallize.Pecou composed 'Harpe de jade' for the international harp competition of the Cite des Arts in Paris. The work is dedicated to the internationally renowned harpist Isabelle Moretti. 'Harpe de jade' is the first work of the young French composer published by Schott Music.

“Variations on an Ancient Tune” by Carlos Salzedo is the third and final work of a series called Three Pieces'for Solo Pedal Harp. Difficult to play, it requires good mastering of the instrument and of its technique, including the pedals. John Stanleyâ??s 30 Voluntaries (translatable as preludes), published in three collections as opp. 5, 6 and 7, are among the best known organ works of the 18th century. These free-style compositions were received with great appreciation by his contemporaries; the first volume, published in 1748, immediately achieved canonical status and encouraged other composers to write similar collections. The pieces, of easy to medium difficulty, are for manuals (alternatively, they can also be played on the harpsichord) and comprise two movements, slow and fast, many of which are characterized by a certain rhythmic energy and richness of color, expressed through the use of solo registers such as cornet and trumpet, with multiple echo effects, here adapted and transformed into piano, forte, and playing near the sound board effect, limiting, or rather modifying, their results.
