This chart was written when Thad lived in Denmark and was named after jazz organist Rhoda Scott. This writing is typical Thad that was a favorite of the Mel Lewis Orchestra and it is still played by the Village Vanguard Orchestra. This medium tempo AABA composition displays the classic Thad Jones harmonic and melodic approach to writing for a big band. Not as well known as Don’t Get Sassy or Tip Toe as it was first recorded in Denmark and then again with the Mel Lewis Orch on the The Definitive Thad Jones CD’s recorded in the US in 1988, but it is a great one. Written solos. Written ranges: Trp. 1 (A), Trb. (G) , Alto (D).

Strayhorn's Cashmere Cutie is about texture and composition. A medium swing at 132--138 BPM, this chart is the real deal---composed and arranged by Billy Strayhorn. It's loaded with beautiful sophisticated voicings, yet the music flows easily. Tenor 1 doubles clarinet and alto 2 doubles a two-measure flute line. There is a written-out piano introduction that is complex but it can be improvised in lieu of the written part plus there is an optional alternate easier piano intro part included. 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 4 rhythm.

The name says it all in this swingin' piece featuring the trombone section with a brassy attitude. It's a twelve bar, B-flat blues tune that gives the trombones a chance to shine with both unison and harmonized lines. The trumpets and saxes add in with complimentary hits and counter melodies. The piece works great as an easy laid back swing or with an up tempo groove. The ranges are modest but everyone in audience will know if some have a 'bone to pick with them!

Tropical Sunrise is a laid-back bossa-nova tune. With a relaxed and unhurried feel, students will learn to pay close attention to dynamic contrasts, especially on the soft side. The capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, is known for parties and festivals but it has a quieter side as well. This piece reflects that softer edge.

This classic chart is taken directly from the original ink parts that were on the stands at the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra (now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) debut performance in February 1966 and continue to be played by the group Monday nights at the Village Vanguard in New York City. Originally commissioned by Count Basie for an entire album of Thad Jones' music, but Basie never made the record, and suggested that Thad start his own band instead. From that advice, Thad formed the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. Based on the chord changes to I Got Rhythm, this uptempo advanced level chart maintains the swinging Basie mindset and is in a 32-measure AABA form. Duration 8:50.

This adaptation of the Charlie Parker classic features a fast swing tempo and the bop-style lines you'd expect, but it also pays tribute to Bird by casting selected horns in intimate, combo-like settings within the full ensemble format. The solo work goes to lead alto, and alternating sax and brass solis culminate in a shout that takes this chart out strong.
