Paul Merrill, director of the Cornell University Jazz Ensemble (Ithaca, NY), commissioned this engaging bossa nova original for proficient groups. Don't let the title fool you, though, because there's an abundance of subtle, yet challenging material here requiring a mature approach from the ensemble. The melody is based on a simple four-note motif played by Miles Davis on his album Tutu. Brown later adapted this score for small-group and recorded it on his CD Night Waves (Brown Cats Productions/BC9501). Guitar, tenor sax, and flugelhorn are featured in melodic and solo roles. Duration 5:35.

Not just any box, but the venerable Chatterbox jazz club! Monika originally recorded this hard-driving shuffle with her Acoustic Project. Now, the angular bebop lines are traded between trumpets and saxes. Solos for trombone, tenor sax, and guitar are provided in note-for-note transcriptions. However, there is room for any soloist before a sax soli further develops the melodic theme. Punchy and confident, this chart does not let up! Top trumpet note: G5 (4:00).

Bring your trumpets out front and let them herald in the holiday season, starting with a fanfare that leads into a fun, swinging version of this well known carol. It's easy to work up, and it's playable with limited instrumentation so it will sound fine with as few as 2 trumpets. After playing through the tune, the bones, bass & bari get a fun riff going. Then the saxes and trumpets trade twos over it. This leads up to a key change and the trumpets lead the way to the end. No solos.

Let the rhythm section lay down an earthy groove in half-time funk. The horns ride along with a bluesy melody that builds to a great stop-time. Modest ranges all around with reduced instrumentation (3 Saxes, 2 Trumpets, 1 Bone) keep it within reach of smaller groups, while extra parts for Flute, Clarinet, Horn, Baritone T.C., and Tuba add flexibility. Solo transcriptions are provided that match the recording, along with easier versions of those solos to give younger players a starting point. A hip, fun, and memorable chart. (Top Trumpet Note: D5).

Frequent use of triplet arpeggios and effective dynamic shadings add to its appeal. Solo space is included for alto and bari sax, along with an open solo section. Let the trumpets show off (like they always want to do) with Go For It, a hard-driving jazz-rock chart in the style of Chase. All sections get their time in the spotlight, with some great interplay between the saxes and bones, and the drummer even gets to do some hard-rock licks after the solo section. But it's the trumpets who take command! If you want some flashy excitement at your next jazz concert, you just gotta Go For It!.
