As the title implies, this is a laid back swing chart that features lots of tutti rhythms in the winds to help teach this important Jazz style. There is a cool harmonic shift in the B section of the chart that adds a colorful flair. This is a very easy chart that sounds big and full, even with reduced instrumentation.

A follow-up to his successful Steppin' Up To The Blues, this new blues in F is as easy as it gets, but it sounds great and kids love it! Each chorus of blues adds a new idea in the winds and in the rhythm section based on the previous chorus, so the chart will come together quickly. In the solo section, the background figures are based on guide tones (thirds and sevenths) so the band will be able to really hear the blues progression and build easy solos using just a few notes.

Aside from being a great piece to program, this new chart has a wealth of ways built into it to help you teach blues form and improvisation. This composition is sequenced and developed through each 12-bar chorus using the six scale steps of the Bb blues scale as the foundation. The solo section opens up for any and all wind players to use the blues scale patterns from the first five choruses as the basis for their improvisation. However, this chart is a must have for every jazz director for the rhythm section parts alone! Each of these parts is designed for the individual instrument, and they will serve as resource guides for you and your students.

If you have a beginning jazz ensemble, this work deserves your serious consideration. Based upon a traditional Native American song, this composition is a theme and variations tour de force! The simple theme is stated by all the winds with some Stravinsky-like punctuation in the rhythm section. This theme is then transformed through four key centers and a contrapuntal treatment before arriving at the shout chorus, in this case a beautiful reharmonization of the melody.
