Dedicated to the late Larry Swist, this shuffle chart features solo changes in all the saxophone parts, a stop-time section featuring the trombones, as well as the other two wind sections. An exciting shout chorus follows, ending with an open drum solo before the final chord.

Fashioned after the playing of J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding, this moderate swing original casts the trombone section in a variety of starring roles -- solis, trading 'fours' with the rest of the band, and a short ad lib solo. Some sax soli work and a short trumpet solo give the 'bones a chance to rest their chops before the chart goes out strong. Duration 3:50.

Still one of the funkiest tunes ever written, here is Earth, Wind and Fire's “September” in a version for younger bands. Paul Murtha expertly captures the infectious groove of the original. You simply can't go wrong with this one!

Opens with an interesting slow section with a wind ensemble-like approach. Trumpets in 5ths play a haunting theme which weaves its way to a faster section with a groove supporting a tenor solo and variations on the theme.

Let It Groove is all about the pocket! The feeling of the chart is reminiscent of Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man or Lee Morgan's Sidewinder. The bass line is anchored to the bass drum pattern, and the enclosed rhythm exercises are an excellent tool for creating a cohesive rhythmic concept throughout the band. The solo section is a 12 bar Bb blues and can be opened up to include several soloists.

This pop hit recorded by the Emotions in 1997 has a distinctive Earth, Wind and Fire vibe thanks to composers Maurice White and Al McKay. Most recently used as the basis for Paul Russell's “Lil Boo Thang,” here is an arrangement for young jazz ensembles that features a funky groove and all the signature horn riffs from the original.

Recorded in 1997 on The Danish Radio Big Band Plays Thad Jones album in tribute to the years he worked with that group, this breezy bossa nova with colorful woodwinds isn't as difficult to perform as many of Thad's other charts. Solos for piano and/or guitar precede the full-ensemble climax followed by a quiet finish. Duration 4:15.

This lovely ballad for developing groups is a tip-of-the-hat to the tuneful ballads of the 1940's and 1950's. Warm textures are created by the densely voiced chords and winding melody. Written or ad lib solo space is provided for trumpet. While the tempo and note values of a ballad are accessible in terms of technical and range demands, working on proper blend, balance, and nuance will sustain the interest of even the most seasoned groups. Each set includes a guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson. Duration 3:30.

A haunting melody composed by a true musical innovator, this straight-eighth chart in 3/4 is an accessible trumpet or flugelhorn solo feature with an outstanding jazz ensemble background. In a beautifully quiet ballad style, your developing soloist will shine as the melodic material unwinds and is supported by the ensemble. A transcription of the recorded improvised solo section is provided. The top trumpet note is G. Highly recommended!
