Paul Merrill, director of the Cornell University Jazz Ensemble (Ithaca, NY), commissioned this engaging bossa nova original for proficient groups. Don't let the title fool you, though, because there's an abundance of subtle, yet challenging material here requiring a mature approach from the ensemble. The melody is based on a simple four-note motif played by Miles Davis on his album Tutu. Brown later adapted this score for small-group and recorded it on his CD Night Waves (Brown Cats Productions/BC9501). Guitar, tenor sax, and flugelhorn are featured in melodic and solo roles. Duration 5:35.

There are lots of swing charts based on blues changes. This one is in a class of its own. An attention-grabbing intro leads to the unison ensemble melody, followed by a few choruses where all sections trade off with the lead line. The open solo section can feature any instrument with suggested solos included. After a solo spot for drums things get even more interesting and fun! The dynamic level comes way down and your bass player gets to shine with some tasty written solo licks. The final ensemble chorus builds to a shout section that really - SHOUTS! A very impressive, effective and playable chart!

Originally recorded in 1975 by Count Basie and titled because Basie loved to eat orange sherbert, this fresh setting features easy registers, strong jazz figures, and a bright, free-swinging style. A written or ad lib trumpet solo in the midsection and an ensemble shout before the final chord are highlights. Rhythm section parts are notated with chords cued, and a guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included. Duration 2:30.

Once again Peter Blair shows his knack for creating music that sounds fresh and exciting, but is easy enough to come together with a minimum of rehearsal time. This cut-time Latin rock chart showcases the entire ensemble and because all the parts lay so well, you will be able to spend some extra time on style and dynamics.
