A solo section follows that features just the right amount of background writing that enhances the proceedings without ever getting in the way; the solo section may be repeated as desired to feature additional soloists. Spice up your repertoire with hip-hop! The initial riff-based melody is augmented with pyramid figures from the rest of the ensemble. The coiled energy that is built up in this first section of the tune is released into the kinetic motion of the B section. This leads to an extended tenor sax solo that will really allow your soloist to stretch out. A stop time low brass feature follows, which leads back into the head of the tune, where the ensemble can ride it out to the end.

Melbourne Walk-Up was inspired by the composer's visit to Melbourne, Australia, where, in the absence of an elevator in his hotel, he had to trek up the stairs with all of his luggage. Additionally, everyone in the ensemble has an opportunity to improvise in the open solo section, and the set includes two suggested solos and a CD with a solo practice track, to facilitate successful improvisation.

Rio Nido is based on the bossa nova groove, which originated in Brazil. The feel is relaxed throughout, and played in a very unhurried manner. The song has an AABA form, with the melody being passed between the brass and woodwind sections every eight bars before a short interlude into the solo section. Following the solos, a brief shout chorus is heard before the song recaps at the bridge. The piece concludes with a tag of the last four bars of the song, ending on a unison pitch.
