Snowdogs Rock was commissioned by the Central Middle School Jazz Ensemble in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. The piece introduces some different musical elements in the context of a familiar groove (rock) and familiar chord progression (blues). The bridge sections (bars 17-24 and 41-48) feature tone clusters that are somewhat unusual in jazz ensemble pieces. Play the piece on a cold winter's night to heat up the band and the audience!

Written for the 1999 Wisconsin Honors Jazz Ensemble, this tune combines a powerful hip-hop groove, hard-hitting ensemble figures, unique harmonies, compelling minimalist features, and a touch of humor in a musical salute to Green Bay Packers legend Ray Nitschke. Brass ranges are reasonable, and highly accessible improvisation showcases for tenor sax and trumpet are included. Originally written in 1946 by Charlie Parker soon after his longtime friend and musical companion Dizzy Gillespie left him in Los Angeles to return to New York City, this uptempo setting for big band in the original key of Bb features the I Got Rhythm changes on which Parker's tune is based. A wide-open solo for lead alto, shorter solo segments for 3 trombones, and an 8-bar unaccompanied solo for the drummer allows ample stretching room for proficient players. Duration 3:45.
