This arrangement of Peter Erskine's Bulgaria is a real tour de force for the entire ensemble, and always brings the audience to its feet. It features solo space for trombone, soprano sax, piano (or optional vibes), and drums, as well as a wild and exciting section with five soprano saxophones in unison, reflecting the intense feeling of certain kinds of Bulgarian folk dances. Clarinet may be substituted for some of the sopranos, if necessary.

This advanced level edition is taken directly from the original ink parts that were on the stands at the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra (now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) debut performance in February 1966 and continues to be played by the group Monday nights at the Village Vanguard in New York City. Originally commissioned by Count Basie for an entire album of Thad Jones' music, however Basie never made the record, instead suggesting that Thad start his own band. This extended 16-bar blues still maintain that swinging Basie mindset in a straight-ahead blues style. Its basic foundations are a relaxed but powerful rhythm section with a driving ride cymbal beat and crisp hi-hat, underpinning saxes and brass that are tight, and always on the back of the beat. Duration 4:40.

This Basie flavored chart does not have the ordinary chord progression. It's pretty jazz, but always keep the beat in mind. It heats up with some very interesting, playable ensemble work from measure 73 to the end.

Obtaining a good blend is always difficult with an open sax voicing such as the one in measure 73it may take several attempts to achieve this. This arrangement also uses the voicing of 1st Alto Sax in prime unison with 1st Trumpet during ensemble sections. As for dynamics, remember to increase volume when ascending the scale and decrease it when descending the scale.

Sensational ballad feature for solo trombone or tenor sax. It begins simply in a minor key and keeps building to the key change (in major) and a huge, powerful finish. Rhythm section and solo parts are completely written out. A truly impressive and memorable chart at this, or any grade level. Gorgeous!

Gato del Sol is everything a bossa nova should be: subtle, melodic, and always in a relaxed groove. An ample tenor sax solo covering an entire chorus of the tune, plus a montuno, is just one highlight of how the tune unfolds. The contented feel of this chart will have your audience humming along, and smiling all the way home. Highest trumpet note: C.

Let the trumpets show off (like they always want to do) with Go For It, a hard-driving jazz-rock chart in the style of Chase. All sections get their time in the spotlight, with some great interplay between the saxes and bones, and the drummer even gets to do some hard-rock licks after the solo section. But it's the trumpets who take command! If you want some flashy excitement at your next jazz concert, you just gotta Go For It!.

Named after a popular Latin dance club in New York City that recently closed, this authentic salsa original is a showstopper in every way! After opening with a dynamic tutti unison, it features two Latin styles, songo and samba. Songo rhythms are most commonly heard in salsa music and employ lots of syncopation supported by a repetitious, but always moving rhythm section background. The samba rhythm used in the interlude features lush, modern voicings. Solo space is reserved for soprano sax, tenor sax, trumpet and trombonea member of the rhythm section could also solo. A guitar chord chart by Jim Greeson is included in each set. Duration 4:35.

This funk chart was originally recorded by the Yellowjackets for their Time Squared CD. Filled with unexpected twists and turns, this big band version requires a triplet-based swing feel similar to hip-hop. As always, paying careful attention to dynamics and articulations will render a more impressive performance. Duration 6:40.

Jazz music doesn't always have to be higher, faster, & louder – and this chart is proof that you can generate plenty of excitement by laying-back. It's great for teaching your band how to keep a slower tempo without rushing, and the open solo section on Bb blues changes is perfect for building confidence in young improvisers. The background parts sound so full you can play them without the solos if you desire and it will still sound great. A definite winner!
