If I Gave My Heart is a gorgeous swing ballad for younger bands. Lots of ensemble writing will help the band learn to play together, but there is also space for a short sax soli and a short brass soli. No improv is required, but your piano player gets to shine with lots of written fills between melody phrases. While written at an easy level, If I Gave My Heart is perfect for any ensemble that wants a ballad and a chance to take a little pressure off those chops!! Keep swingin’!

There are lots of swing charts based on blues changes. This one is in a class of its own. An attention-grabbing intro leads to the unison ensemble melody, followed by a few choruses where all sections trade off with the lead line. The open solo section can feature any instrument with suggested solos included. After a solo spot for drums things get even more interesting and fun! The dynamic level comes way down and your bass player gets to shine with some tasty written solo licks. The final ensemble chorus builds to a shout section that really - SHOUTS! A very impressive, effective and playable chart!

Our 4th offering in the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra Signature Editions, is Once Around. This fast swing advanced level chart was among the first charts Thad Jones wrote for the new band in 1966, as a more modern contrast to the Basie-oriented arrangements that were in the band's early repertoire. Early 1960's forays into more open, modal jazz forms by Miles Davis and John Coltrane had turned the jazz world upside down in just a few years, prompting many artists to expand from bebop-oriented ii-V-I chord structures. This arrangement was one of Thad Jones' responses to that trend. This piece is a wide-open vehicle for improvisation. There are multiple open solo sections, each with extended improvisation opportunities. Duration 3:00.
