Commissioned by the Kentucky Music Educators' Association for its 2002 All-State Jazz Ensemble, the inspiration for this medium-advanced, up-swing release comes from the music of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and Birdland, NYC's legendary jazz club. Though improvised solos are assigned to trumpet and trombone, chord sheets are included so anyone can serve as soloist. Mike's score calls for five trumpets, and the chart takes about six minutes from start to finish.

This classic chart is taken directly from the original ink parts that were on the stands at the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra (now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) debut performance in February 1966 and continue to be played by the group Monday nights at the Village Vanguard in New York City. Originally commissioned by Count Basie for an entire album of Thad Jones' music, but Basie never made the record, and suggested that Thad start his own band instead. From that advice, Thad formed the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra. Based on the chord changes to I Got Rhythm, this uptempo advanced level chart maintains the swinging Basie mindset and is in a 32-measure AABA form. Duration 8:50.

Snowdogs Rock was commissioned by the Central Middle School Jazz Ensemble in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. The piece introduces some different musical elements in the context of a familiar groove (rock) and familiar chord progression (blues). The bridge sections (bars 17-24 and 41-48) feature tone clusters that are somewhat unusual in jazz ensemble pieces. Play the piece on a cold winter's night to heat up the band and the audience!

This advanced level edition is taken directly from the original ink parts that were on the stands at the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra (now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra) debut performance in February 1966 and continues to be played by the group Monday nights at the Village Vanguard in New York City. Originally commissioned by Count Basie for an entire album of Thad Jones' music, however Basie never made the record, instead suggesting that Thad start his own band. This extended 16-bar blues still maintain that swinging Basie mindset in a straight-ahead blues style. Its basic foundations are a relaxed but powerful rhythm section with a driving ride cymbal beat and crisp hi-hat, underpinning saxes and brass that are tight, and always on the back of the beat. Duration 4:40.

As recorded by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra on their Monday Night album, this expressive swing ballad gives solo work to trumpet, trombone, and to everyone for 3 bars just before the closing section, where Thad's directions say everybody play a solo in any key. An ad lib trumpet solo on the final fermata brings this classic chart to a satisfying close. Rhythm section parts are partially notated. Duration 6:00.

As recorded by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra for their Monday Night album, the opening rhythm section vamp sets the stage for the entrance of the featured soprano (or alto) sax soloist. With the exception of an expandable solo for piano midway through and some great full-band choruses, the soloist carries the day here. The chart closes out strong with a series of improvised solo cadenzas. Duration ca. 5:15.
