Rio Nido is based on the bossa nova groove, which originated in Brazil. The feel is relaxed throughout, and played in a very unhurried manner. The song has an AABA form, with the melody being passed between the brass and woodwind sections every eight bars before a short interlude into the solo section. Following the solos, a brief shout chorus is heard before the song recaps at the bridge. The piece concludes with a tag of the last four bars of the song, ending on a unison pitch.

Tropical Sunrise is a laid-back bossa-nova tune. With a relaxed and unhurried feel, students will learn to pay close attention to dynamic contrasts, especially on the soft side. The capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, is known for parties and festivals but it has a quieter side as well. This piece reflects that softer edge.

Here's an ebullient and flashy solo feature for clarinet and big band. The ensemble swings brightly with intricate but accessible orchestrations while the bouncy solo shines with riffs and glissandi. A transcription of the improvised portion of the solo is provided. The top trumpet note is A. This is serious literature for any clarinetist to consider!

With a bit of progressive rock and a lot of half-time funk, this great chart can be rounded out with optional synthesizer and electric guitar. The sticky grooves and melodies drive the point home. Two carefully transcribed solos are provided for trumpet and guitar that match the superb recorded solos, or they can be improvised as desired. Optional parts are included for flute/violin, clarinet and F horn, and the lead trumpet range is to G top of staff. You can have fun and experiment with different effects in the optional synthesizer part that's well worth the effort. Serious fun and great change-of-pace programming!

A very clever treatment of this well-known traditional spiritual, the opening statement is a slow chorale moving into an easy shuffle played around 138 BPM. The melody bounces between sections then into a driving shuffle that swings. Solos are provided for trombone 1 and alto 1, lead trumpet range is to written G. This chart is excellent! (4:45).
