The opening unison brass soli, joined by saxophone counterpoint, leads to an energetic exchange between the sections, followed by the tenor sax solo over contemporary harmonies. After exciting exchanges between soloist and ensemble, the band takes over with an intense interlude leading to a piano solo over more traditional changes. Commissioned for the Cardinal Vaughn Memorial School Jazz Band in London, England, this swing shuffle original for proficient bands will energize players and audiences. Equally appropriate as an opener, closer or anything in between, solos are offered to trumpet and trombone, but blues-based changes mean that the solo section can be expanded for other players if desired. Afterward there is a great stop-time sax soli with trumpet lead that yields to another solo section with changes cued in the saxophone parts. This playful medium-tempo swinger features a smooth, self-assured melody that glides along a cool, slightly altered blues progression. Trumpet and alto sax carry the melody at first before passing it off to the brass section; saxophones cleverly punctuate the brass section with heavily accented chords. The saxophones take the melody the third time around, while the brass offers incisive interjections here and there. A solo section follows that features just the right amount of background writing that enhances the proceedings without ever getting in the way; the solo section may be repeated as desired to feature additional soloists.
