Commissioned by the New York University Jazz Ensemble, this medium uptempo foray with abstract overtones features solos by tenor and piano. The opening unison brass soli, joined by saxophone counterpoint, leads to an energetic exchange between the sections, followed by the tenor sax solo over contemporary harmonies. After exciting exchanges between soloist and ensemble, the band takes over with an intense interlude leading to a piano solo over more traditional changes. The final shout chorus brings the band to its peak, leading to a final vamp that slowly builds to a powerful finish. Rhythm section parts are partially notated with chords cued. Duration 9:15.

Recorded by Joe Sample and The Crusaders in 1971, Put It Where You Want It is a great example of an early jazz fusion tune that has stood the test of time.
