Snowdogs Rock was commissioned by the Central Middle School Jazz Ensemble in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. The piece introduces some different musical elements in the context of a familiar groove (rock) and familiar chord progression (blues). The bridge sections (bars 17-24 and 41-48) feature tone clusters that are somewhat unusual in jazz ensemble pieces. Play the piece on a cold winter's night to heat up the band and the audience!

This easy swing ballad pays homage to the great Neal Hefti and his classic Li'l Darlin', which was written for the Count Basie Orchestra and is now standard repertoire in the big band genre. There is plenty of ensemble work, along with a great written tenor sax solo (also with chord symbols). For greater performance flexibility, an optional solo sheet is included for other instruments as well. A great vehicle for teaching the most basic elements of jazz in a musical setting!

Written for the 1999 Wisconsin Honors Jazz Ensemble, this tune combines a powerful hip-hop groove, hard-hitting ensemble figures, unique harmonies, compelling minimalist features, and a touch of humor in a musical salute to Green Bay Packers legend Ray Nitschke. Brass ranges are reasonable, and highly accessible improvisation showcases for tenor sax and trumpet are included. The alternating 4/4 and 2/4 bars throughout may seem a little intimidating at first, but will fall into place quickly.

Originally recorded by Monika Herzig and a cast of musical collaborators from around the globe on her 2016 album, The Whole World in Her Hands, Oh, Muddy Waters is a bluesy call-and-response between bass instruments and the whole ensemble. Monika has arranged the small group version for big band, with modest brass ranges, suggested piano voicings, and solo space for tenor sax and guitar (or piano). Solo transcriptions are provided that match the recording note-for-note. Laid-back, soft syncopations and a rich harmonic language bring to life a composition that builds on that initial bass riff. Top trumpet note: G5.
