Northwoods Sunrise was inspired by visits to the beautiful north woods of Minnesota. This chart is a terrific way to introduce students to a contemporary straight eighth groove. A simple piano ostinato leads to a lilting melody and a solo section that features very simple chord changes. A contrapuntal shout section leads to the return of the original melody and piano ostinato. A terrific piece for teaching form and structure and a great addition to any program.

Material from the introduction is then used as a transition to the solo section. The shout chorus features unison rhythms that are very helpful in getting young players to phrase properly. Introductory material returns at the end, tying the entire piece together.
