However, the early influences do not come exclusively from a single source. The toccatas of Hassler, the ricercari of Steigleder, the fantasias of Cornet and Kerckhoven, the fugues of Couperin, and anonymous late medieval keyboard music all are thrown into the mix, and blended with a contemporary use of mixed modality. The opening triple-meter prelude in Eb major is sunny and bright in character, with its arpeggiated textures evoking plucked strings. The fughetta begins in the relative minor (C), with a darker and more dissonantly chromatic character; however, it works through several keys to end in Eb major. The concluding allegro returns to joyous mood of the opening movement (though its middle section returns again to C minor).

These three dances (pavane, tordion, and allemande) are inspired by Renaissance forms, although they employ a harmonic and melodic language that blends allusions to Renaissance harmony with more contemporary elements.
