Keyboard Duration: 5' Composed: 2014 Published by: Zimbel Press The formal inspiration for this piece came from early Italian keyboard toccatas (those of Frescobaldi are probably the most famous today, though there are certainly many others). However, the early influences do not come exclusively from a single source. The toccatas of Hassler, the ricercari of Steigleder, the fantasias of Cornet and Kerckhoven, the fugues of Couperin, and anonymous late medieval keyboard music all are thrown into the mix, and blended with a contemporary use of mixed modality. This piece may be played on any keyboard instrument (organ, piano, harmonium/reed organ, harpsichord, clavichord, or electronic keyboard).

Keyboard Duration: 8' Composed: 2013 Published by: Zimbel Press Ricercari are three pieces inspired by the keyboard music of the early and mid 16th century. During this time, the genre of the ricercare developed as a sort of instrumental motet and a kind of proto-fugue. Each work here is a contrapuntal ricercare in a modal cast, each in a different number of voices. However, all three blend elements of the 16th century style with more contemporary sounds. These pieces may be played on any keyboard instrument (organ, piano, harmonium/reed organ, harpsichord, clavichord, or electronic keyboard).

Complementary to K49, this collection is a unique offering of music by John Amner, Nicholas Carleton and John Tomkins that is the only surviving keyboard music by the respective composers. In addition to a pair of duets, in themselves an unusual feature from the period, there are two lengthy sets of variations, Amner's being a rare example of those on a metrical psalm or hymn-tune (possibly by Tallis in this case), John Tomkins's being more conventionally modelled on the variation sets of William Byrd. Nicholas Carleton's 'A verse of 4 parts' and 'Upon the sharp' include several examples of unusual chromatic notation and wide-ranging tonal schemes. CONTENTS Prelude (for two to play): Nicholas Carleton? A verse (In nomine) for two to play: Nicholas Carleton A verse of 4 parts: Nicholas Carleton Upon the sharp: Nicholas Carleton O Lord, in thee is all my trust: John Amner John come kiss me now: John Tomkins.

All eighteen pieces in this collection are reliably dated to the reign of James I, and whether by named composers or anonymous ones, appear in sources other than the notable virginal books preserved in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The contents demonstrate the variety of forms in the keyboard repertoire of this period, from plainsong-based compositions to dances by Orlando Gibbons. The 'Pretty ways for young beginners to look on', possibly by Thomas Tomkins, are a fascinating example of music contemporary to the time, written with the didactic purpose of instructing musicians in the techniques of counterpoint. CONTENTS Prelude in d: Edward Gibbons Gaudent in caelis: Anon. Miserere: Anon. Upon a plainsong: Attrib. Orlando Gibbons Verse in G: Anon. Fantasia in a: John (or Thomas) Holmes Fantasia in G: Attrib. Orlando Gibbons Fantasia in G: Anon. Pavan in e: Anon. Galliard in C: Anon. Galliard in F: Anon. Fortune my foe: Anon. A set of 24 three movement sonatas that can be played on any keyboard instrument (organ, piano, harmonium/reed organ, harpsichord, clavichord, or electronic keyboard). The composer writes the following: My inspiration for composing these sonatas comes as a direct result of the music of the Renaissance and early Baroque. It is an attempt by this composer to capture in his own musical vocabulary some of the 'essence' that pervades the music of these past centuries. These pieces are easy to play and extremely useful for services, recitals, or teaching. Instrumentation: Keyboard. Composed: 2012 Published by: Zimbel Press.

This set of six short two-movement keyboard sonatinas, or ‘lessons’ (in the traditional English manner), come from a hitherto overlooked 1755 publication by a composer already well known and appreciated for his slightly earlier oboe sonatas. Vincent’s melodic gifts and skill in musical construction, clearly evident in the wind sonatas, are here complemented by an obvious flair for effective keyboard writing and an ability to spring welcome musical surprises.

The beauty and simplicity of early American folk hymns are arranged here in sensitive, well-designed dialogues by composer and arranger James Clemens. The violin writing is lyrical and playful! The piano, not merely an accompanying instrument, functions as duet partner exchanging imaginative ideas.
