Musical interpretation is first and foremost a question of shaping a melody or the melodic line of a setting. Music, like any language, follows its own set of rules and a sufficient knowledge and familiarity with musical 'grammar' is therefore an essential prerequisite of any convincing interpretation. The internationally renowned performer and teacher Peter-Lukas Graf explains in great detail the parameters that have to be taken into account for a successful interpretation: rhythm, metre, agogics, articulation, phrasing, ornamentation and implied polyphony, etc. Numerous examples from the flute repertoire of the 17th-20th century serve as models from which he derives the 'rules' appropriate for an interpretation in keeping with each period. * These rules are not intended to be dogmatic but instead should stimulate the players to form their own opinion. About 'rules' * Preface * Golden rules for the interpreter * The structure and analysis of melody * Notes on the execution of ornamentation in the 17th and 18th centuries * Ornamentation in the 19th and 20th centuries * Phrasing * Rhythm * Accents * Dynamics * Tempo * Metre * Flexibility of rhythm/rubato * Shaping the musical phrase * Conclusion * Bibliography * Index * Musical examples.

Concerto IX. Woodcock’s only surviving musical compositions are a set of twelve concertos (3 for flute, 3 for recorder, and 3 for oboe) published by Walsh and Hare in London circa 1727. The concertos were originally published under the title: XII Concertos. The three flute concertos in this set are the earliest known published for that instrument, and the three oboe concertos are the first known by an English composer. Vivaldi published his opus 10 flute concertos shortly thereafter, in c.1728, and the earliest oboe concertos were published by the Italian composer Albinoni in 1715.This Concerto is available in two versions:C504Piano ReductionKeyboard score (Piano/Harpsichord)with Flute partC505 (this version)Full Score and PartsIncludes score and set of parts for Flute, Violin 1 & 2 and VioloncelloThe Optional Basso Continuo Part is available to downloadfrom www.CliftonEdition.com/C504Grades 4–5Former Spartan Press Cat. For the teacher of instrumental music classes, individual differences among students are inevitable. Unfortunately, the lack of flexible materials frequently forces teachers to adopt a quasi-instructional procedure best described as lockstep, where all students in the class rehearse each exercise until the slow members of the class succeed or until the teacher gives up. The Individualized Instructor was designed with the expectation that students are different. With this method, high-, average-, and low-achieving students in a class are able to progress simultaneously at their own rate according to their interest and ability. In addition, the flexibility of the instructional format often allows twelve or more students to perform different musical material simultaneously, thereby eliminating the “follow the leader†approach to music learning. All study materials in the series are musical. Nonmusical exercises are excluded in favor of folk song literature, musical rounds, and musical ensembles. Furthermore, The Individualized Instructor encourages students to think about their music: to analyze unfamiliar material, generalize previously learned concepts and skills, and synthesize all elements into a musically proficient performance. In addition, this series develops many fundamentals (tonality, phrasing, tempo, and musical style) through the use of the singing voice. Singing best provides the “musical†experience that, subsequently, can be applied to the development of musically sensitive instrumental performance. Books 1, 2, and 3 and the supplementary books ensure that these fundamental ideas are carried well beyond the first year of instruction.

This is a set of studies for flute in jazz style. Each of the pieces is based loosely on the blues: that is, it has a twelve bar theme on a chord sequence which is a regular jazz blues or a modified version of it. To offer some novelty and challenge I have chosen to use a variety of musical elements, some at the limit of mainstream jazz language: such as whole tone scales and quartal arpeggios, with the aim of giving each study a peculiarity, hence the title of this collection: 'Odd Blues'. It is hoped that these studies may offer a source of stimuli to the jazz flute improviser and also serve as performance pieces. Each study presents the theme twice, with some slight reinterpretation on the repeat, two choruses of written out 'solo' and a reprise of the theme with a finale. Geoff Warren, 2016.
