Variations on a Mozart tune, for Flute and Piano is a piece composed by Reynaldo Hahn and dedicated to Philippe Gaubert. Composed after a tune by Mozart, this piece features a main theme and a total of seven variations whichfollow one another. The Flute score features many trills, especially in the Variation 2, some fast rhythms and up to 6 flats on the key for the Variation 4. It would require a good mastery of techniques for these challengingparts. Reynaldo Hahn was a naturalised French composer, conductor, theatre director and singer. Dedicated to Demarre McGill, Principal Flute, Seattle Symphony OrchestraFlute Duration: 6' Composed: 2020 Published by: Subito Music Publishing PROGRAM NOTE: The year 2020 has definitely been a very challenging year with many upheavals. During this time of the COVID-19 health crisis, wearing masks, and high racial tensions, I decided to compose four short solo woodwind works for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, which represent the core woodwind section in an orchestra. I was inspired to compose these short pieces after I first heard Igor Stravinsky's three short pieces for clarinet, which totals a little more than four minutes in duration. I thought that it would be nice to highlight and honor my African-American male colleagues in the orchestral music world. I wanted to celebrate the fact that they are the principal player in the section of their respective orchestras. The short pieces are as follows: Principal Brother No. 1 for flute solo for Demarre McGill, Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 2 for oboe solo for Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Principal Brother No. 3 for clarinet solo for Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and Principal Brother No. 4 for bassoon solo for Bryan Young, Principal Bassoon of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. These works all begin with notes that are representative of their name; D for Demarre, B for Titus (ti in solfège starting on C), A for Anthony, and Bb for Bryan. There is also a rhythmic figure in the opening measures of each piece, which represent the utterance of their names. All four of these works are rhapsodic in nature with elements of improvisation. - James Lee III.

Flute Duration: 3'49 Composed: 1986 Published by: Calabrese Brothers Music Being for Solo Flute (1986), by Helmut Christoferus Calabrese, is a work that develops its themes while rests increase in duration until the flute reaches the sparse middle section. Following the climactic statements, a return to a transformed recapitulation ends the solo on a hesitant high B note which is a metaphorical ending note.

“Despite his studies being interrupted by WWI, Jacques Ibert won the Grand Prix de Rome on his first attempt, proving his significant compositional ability, such as his Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. Ibert's Concerto for Flute was composed in 1934, at the height of his professional career. The work is lighthearted, depicting the composer's favoured use of gentle humour and festivity. These are, however, contrasted by lyrical and evocative passages. Suitable for advanced level flautists, and containing the full orchestral score, this edition of Ibert's Concerto for Flute is a clear, pleasant and varied addition to the Flute's repertoire.â€.

SYRINX, L. 129/CD 137 by Claude Debussy (1862-1918) is among the most famous works for solo flute and is considered to be an indispensable part of the flutist's repertoire. The first solo flute work of any significance since C.P.E. Bach's SONATA in A minor, written over 150 years prior, SYRINX is also credited with reinvigorating the flute as a solo instrument, a trend that continues still. Written as part of the incidental music to Gabriel Mourey's play PSYCHÉ, the short work was originally entitled FLÛTE DE PAN, and it is thought that it was intended to be played off-stage by the dedicatee, famous French flutist Louis Fleury.
