Spring has finally arrived. The days grow longer, birds prepare to nest, trees turn green and plants begin to bloom as nature wakes up from her winter sleep. This, and the fact that the composer’s third grandson was born in the spring, were the inspiration for Spring Song.

Jan Van der Roost and the commissioner of this work have strong personal ties, making By the River a very personal work for both of them. The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region. The next movement, a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use, letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. All the interesting thematic and melodic elements Van der Roost creates will keep the audience engaged through to the very last note! Hierdoor is By the River een zeer persoonlijk en indrukwekkend werk geworden. Votre attentif auditoire en restera époustouflé !By the River è un’opera alla quale Jan Van der Roost è particolarmente affezionato.

This particular arrangement by Leonard Ballentine was based on I know thou art mine, written in 1923. The result is not just a chorale, but more an Adagio for Orchestra, laced with interesting harmonic twists. Arranger Sijtze van der Hoek made a colourfull setting for fanfare band. I know thou art mine.

This bittersweet song from 1967 is a real classic, partly due to the rendition by two queens of soul, Dionne Warwick and later also Aretha Franklin. The theme was very topical at the time: A woman is concerned about her husband fighting in the Vietnam War, and thinks about him during her day-to-day worries. Top arranger Peter Kleine Schaars created a tasteful and carefully orchestrated version. His arrangement stays true to the original colour and feel of the song, and, as a grade 3 piece, is still perfectly playable for most bands. The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar, which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all, the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn, after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf, Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. Set against a festive melody, the hymnresounds in full glory.
