The Spirit of Christmas is a medley of charming Christmas carols, all with an international character. The medley consists of the following five carols: Away in a Manger - The First Noel - It Came Upon the Midnight Clear - O Come, All YeFaithful and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. A four-part choir part in English has been added which can be used ad lib. or you can also opt for singing the melody line only, for example with a soloist and/or the congregation. The arrangementis not too high pitched so that the work can also be used in combination with a children's or High School choir.

Er is ook een optionele 4-stemmige koorpartijbeschikbaar, maar ook als u enkel eenstemmig de melodie wil zingen, kan dit perfect. De moeilijkheidsgraad en omvang laat toe deze prachtige medley met een schoolkoor of kinderkoor te brengen.

The Spirit of Christmas est un medley de cinq merveilleux chants de Noël, célébres dans le monde entier. Vous retrouverez Away in a Manger, The First Noel (Aujourd'hui, le Roi des Cieux), It Came Upon A Midnight Clear, O Come,All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles) et Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Écoutez, le chant des Anges). Cet arrangement peut être interprété avec un Chœur mixte quatre voix (ad lib.), mais il est également possible de fairechanter la ligne mélodique seule par un soliste (avec micro) et/ou par l'assistance. Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) D B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece as one might expect, by the saxophones to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.

Hora Est! is gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het afscheid van Sjoerd de Boer als dirigent van Chr. Fanfarekorps Concordia uit Wjelsryp (Friesland), na maar liefst veertig jaar. Hora Est! is Latijn voor ‘Het is tijd!’. Het zinnetje wordt traditioneel uitgesproken bij een promotie tot doctor op de universiteit, op het moment dat de vastgestelde tijd voor verdediging van het proefschrift om is. De pedel komt dan binnen en stampt met zijn staf op de grond terwijl hij deze woorden roept. In dat opzicht verwijst de titel naar de voormalige universiteitsstad Franeker, de woonplaats van Sjoerd en de stad waar hij jaren lang leraar muziek was aan de christelijke scholengemeenschap. Anderzijds verwijst de titel naar zijn afscheid van Concordia: ‘Het is tijd!’.

The theme of this work is the history of the town of Grafenrheinfeld (Bavaria, Germany) in the twentieth century, a town that is now mainly associated with its nuclear plant. The German word for this is Kraftwerk, which can be divided into the words Kraft (power) and Werk (work). In this composition, it is a metaphor for the ?work? that can be realised through ?power? in a negative way (war) and in a positive way (reconstruction). Musically speaking, power also plays an important role in this work, as opposed to vulnerability, the sense of loss and the insecurity about the lost identity. Based on the text of Lied der Franke ?Kraftwerk? is a powerfully descriptive work thatwill add energy to any concert.

De geschiedenis van Grafenrheinfeld (Beieren, Duitsland) in de twintigste eeuw vormt het thema van dit werk. Deze plaats wordt nu voornamelijk geassocieerd met zijn kerncentrale. Het Duitse woord hiervoor is Kraftwerk, datje kunt onderverdelen in de woorden Kraft (kracht) en Werk (werk). In deze compositie is het dan ook een metafoor voor het ‘werk’ dat door ‘kracht’ wordt gerealiseerd, in negatieve zin (oorlog) en in positieve zin (wederopbouw). Krachtspeelt ook in muzikaal opzicht een belangrijke rol in dit werk, geplaatst tegenover kwetsbaarheid.

Der Titel Kraftwerk steht zunächst für ein Kraftwerk im wörtlichen Sinn, beschreibt aber zugleich die Bedeutung der einzelnen Begriffe Kraft und Werk im positiven und negativen Sinn. Krieg, Zerstörung, Verzweiflung und Trauer, aber andererseits auch Frieden, Hoffnung, Wiederaufbau, Zuversicht und Sorglosigkeit sind die Bilder und Gefühle, die Jacob de Haan in seiner Komposition heraufbeschwört. Ein kontrastreiches Werk, das bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt!

Le terme Kraftwerk est constitué des mots Kraft (la puissance, la force) et Werk (centrale, travail, oeuvre). Jacob de Haan s’appuye sur la polysémie du mot Werk pour créer deux atmosphères musicales antagonistes : la puissance d’une centrale nucléaire qui peut se révéler négative pour l’homme et la puissance d’une oeuvre ou d’un travail constructif dans un environnement positif. Il termine Kraftwerk è costituito dalle parole Kraft (forza, potenza) e Werk (centrale, lavoro). Jacob de Haan si appoggia sulla polisemia della parola Werk per creare due atmosfere musicali antagoniste: la potenza di una centrale nucleare che può rivelarsi negativa per l’uomo e la potenza di un’opera o di un lavoro costruttivo in ambiente positivo. At the end of the 1960s the group Creedence Clearwater Revival wrote many successful numbers, many of which were covered by various artists. Proud Mary - one of their best known songs was covered many times and this arrangement by Thijs Oud is based on Tina Turner’s performance. For the musicians this is a fantastic piece to play. Each section has a challenging, yet satisfying part. For the audience this well-known and stirring number is a smash!

The popular Swedish children's series Pippi LÃ¥ngstrump (Pippi Longstocking) is about an exceedingly strong and strong-willed little girl with red braids - who is the brainchild of Astrid Lindgren. This series has been broadcasted in many countries. I arranged its cheerful theme tune in samba style. Even with the new rhythm, the original song is still very recognizable. In the exuberant samba style, the percussion plays an important role. Within the LÃ¥ngstrump Samba, this is especially clear in the ad libitum percussion solo halfway through the arrangement. The solo can go on as long as desired, and offers plenty of freedom because of the free choice of the instruments used.

Noel is based on the famous English Carol The First Noel.
The age of this song is not clear.Some scientists argue that this song is from early thirteenth century, others say that it's from the sixteenth century.
The first publication was in 'Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern', compiled by William B. Sandys. (London, 1833).
The exact origin is unknown. By Norman influences on the text, with the result that the spelling of the song is not certified (Noel, Nowell), an individual will claim that France is the home of this song, but in general is assumed that the First Noel 'has been sung somewhere in England for the first time.

'Noel' is gebaseerd op de zeer bekende Engelse Carol 'the First Noel'.
Over de 'leeftijd' van dit lied is men het niet eens. Zo zijn er geleerden die beweren dat het al vanaf begin dertiende eeuw gezongen werd, anderen zeggendat het lied vanaf de zestiende eeuw bestaat.
De eerste publicatie plaats was in een verzamelbundel: 'Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern', bijeengebracht door William B. Sandys. (Londen, 1833).
Over de exacte herkomstis men het wel eens, deze is onbekend. Door Normandische invloeden op de tekst, wat tot gevolg had dat de spelling van het lied niet eensluidend is (Noel, Nowell), wil een enkeling nog wel eens beweren dat Frankrijk de bakermatvan dit lied is, maar over het algemeen wordt aangenomen dat 'the First Noel' voor het eerst ergens in Engeland gezongen is.
