On a war memorial in the Dutch village of Wons is engraved a list of names to honour the fallen in World War II. This is the basis for the name of this piece. However, this composition was written for everyone who has made Wons what it is today: a pretty place near to Lake IJssel with a comfortable way of life. The piece begins with a celebratory introduction in which the village is presented to the listener. There follows a delightful rhythmic and high-tempo theme that reflects the happiness, innocence and carefree atmosphere before the war. Now we hear a moody, fragmented theme depicting soldiers shooting. This is brought to a close with dissonant clusters of sound,intoning the dreadful tragedy of the war. The ensuing quiet gives way to a calm middle section in a minor key that portrays both frustration and consolation. The fast tempo of the beginning returns, this time in the form of a victory march. We hear freedom being celebrated. We hear the previous happy, innocent and carefree themes, too. There follows a festive, martial theme, a tribute to the village, before the piece closes with sounds of celebration.

Op de gedenksteen in het Friese dorp Wons staat een erelijst (roll of honour) gegraveerd ter nagedachtenis aan de gevallenen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De titel van dit werk verwijst naar deze lijst. Deze compositie is echter tevens geschreven voor alle mensen die Wons hebben gemaakt tot wat het nu is: een prachtig dorpje vlak bij het IJsselmeer waar het prettig toeven is. De compositie begint met een statige inleiding, waarin het dorp zich presenteert aan de luisteraar. Dan klinkt een aansprekend ritmisch thema in een snel tempo dat de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid van voor de oorlog uitstraalt. Dit gaat over in een melodie in mineur, die het naderendeoorlogsgevaar aankondigt. Dan is er een grillig thema met stops waarin het schieten van de soldaten te horen is. Dit eindigt in enkele dissonante clusters die het tragische dieptepunt van de oorlog accentueren. De daaropvolgende stilte lost op in een gedragen middendeel in mineur waaruit enerzijds verdriet en anderzijds troost spreekt. Dan komt het snelle tempo van het begin weer terug, ditmaal in de vorm van een vreugdemars. De vrijheid wordt gevierd. Ook het thema van de vrolijkheid, onbevangenheid en onbezorgdheid is weer te horen. Er volgt nu een statig martiaal thema, een eerbetoon aan het dorp, waarna het werk wordt afgesloten met feestelijke klanken.

Auf einem Gedenkstein im niederländischen Dorf Wons ist eine Namensliste zu Ehren der Gefallenen im Zweiten Weltkrieg eingraviert. Auf diese bezieht sich der Titel des Werkes, der wörtlich übersetzt ‘Ehrenliste’ bedeutet. Diese Komposition wurde jedoch für alle Menschen geschrieben, die Wons zu dem gemacht haben, was es heute ist: ein schöner Ort nahe des IJsselmeeres, in dem es sich gut leben lässt. Das Werk beginnt mit einer feierlichen Einleitung, in welcher sich das Dorf dem Zuhörer präsentiert. Dann erklingt ein reizvolles rhythmisches und temporeiches Thema, das die Fröhlichkeit, Unbefangenheit und Sorglosigkeit vor dem Krieg ausstrahlt. Dieses geht in eine Moll-Melodieüber, welche von der nahenden Kriegsgefahr kündet. Dann erklingt ein launenhaftes Thema mit Unterbrechungen, in dem das Schießen der Soldaten zu hören ist. Dieses endet in einigen dissonanten Clustern, die den tragischen Tiefpunkt des Krieges betonen. Die darauffolgende Stille löst sich in einen ruhigen Mittelteil in Moll auf, aus dem einerseits Verdruss und andererseits Trost spricht. Dann kehrt das schnelle Tempo des Anfangs zurück, dieses Mal in der Form eines Freudenmarsches. Die Freiheit wird gefeiert. Auch das Thema der Fröhlichkeit, Unbefangenheit und Sorglosigkeit ist wieder zu hören. Nun folgt ein feierliches, martialisches Thema, eine Ehrerbietung an das Dorf, bevor das Werk mit festlichen Klängen endet.

Sur le monument aux morts du village néerlandais de Wons est gravée une liste de noms en hommage aux soldats tombés lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ce monument a inspiré le titre de cette composition. Mais celle-ci a aussi été écrite pour toutes les personnes qui ont donné Wons son caractère d’aujourd’hui : un joli village proche du lac d’IJssel où il fait bon vivre. La pièce débute par une introduction festive qui présente le village l’auditeur. S’ensuit un thème allègre et délicieusement rythmique qui reflète l’ambiance joyeuse, na ve et optimiste de l’avant-guerre. Puis nous entendons un motif sombre et fragmenté, représentant les fusillades ciblant les soldats. Cettepartie se termine par un faisceau de sons dissonants traduisant le caractère tragique de la guerre. Le calme revient avec un passage tranquille en mineur qui évoque la fois la frustration et l’apaisement. Le tempo du début est repris, cette fois sous la forme d’une marche victorieuse. Puis résonnent les accents premiers de gaieté, d’innocence et d’insouciance, invoquant la célébration de la liberté. Un thème martial et festif en hommage au village nous mène un pétillant finale.

The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

Dan volgt ¡Adiós españoles! over het einde van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.Rembrandt’s Night Watch beschrijft de ontwikkeling op cultureel gebied: in de Gouden Eeuw schilderde Rembrandt van Rijn zijn beroemde Nachtwacht. Deel vier, The Admiral, begint met Rule Britannia,waarna de Nederlandse admiraal Michiel de Ruyter de Engelsen een toontje lager laat zingen, er is zelfs kanongebulder te horen. Dan klinkt een fragment van het Nederlandse liedje dat aan Michiel de Ruyter is gewijd, waarna een passendslot volgt.

In dieser Periode erlebte das Land eine Blütezeit des (Übersee-)Handels, der Kultur und Politik, es befreite sich von der spanischen Herrschaft, brachte Kunstwerke wie Rembrandt’s Nachtwache hervor und entwickelte sich zu einer Kolonialmacht. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuhörer ist bei Kees Schoonenbeeks spannender musikalischer Geschichtsstunde garantiert!

Après une guerre qui dura 80 ans, l'Espagne reconnut finalement l'indépendance des Provinces-Unies néerlandaises, qui devinrent alors l’une des plus importantes puissances maritimes et économiques du XVIIe siècle. Cette période est connue sous le nom de Siècle d’or (The Golden Age) et correspond une phase de développement exceptionnel des Pays-Bas tant sur le plan colonial et militaire que sur le plan culturel, intellectuel et artistique.

Dopo una guerra che durò 80 anni, la Spagna riconobbe l’indipendenza delle Province-Unite olandesi che divennero potenze marittime ed economiche del XVII secolo. Questo periodo è conosciuto con il nome di Secolo d’Oro (The Golden Age) e corrisponde ad una fase di sviluppo eccezionale dei Paesi Bassi sia sul piano coloniale e militare, sia sul piano culturale, intellettuale e artistico.

The Other Side was written as a farewell to a loved one. Following the melancholy theme of mourning in a minor key we also hear the happy memories in major key and also the knowledge that the person who has gone to ‘a better place’ is now at peace. This is a soulful and calm work that leaves plenty of space for the musicians’ and listeners’ own thoughts. This set includes optional parts for piano and vibraphone.

The Other Side is geschreven als afscheid van een geliefde persoon. Behalve het melancholische mineurthema komen in dit werk ook mooie herinneringen in majeur naar voren. Bovendien klinkt in de muziek de hoop door dat de betreffende persoon nueen goed leven heeft ‘aan gene zijde’. Dit gevoelige, rustige werk laat muzikanten en luisteraars de ruimte voor hun eigen gedachten. De set bevat optionele partijen voor piano en vibrafoon.

THE OTHER SIDE wurde zum Abschied von einem geliebten Menschen geschrieben. Neben dem melancholischen Trauerthema in Moll klingen jedoch auch die schönen Erinnerungen in Dur durch und auch die Zuversicht, dass es die Person nun auf der „anderenSeite“ gut hat. Ein gefühlvolles, ruhiges Werk, das den Musikern und Zuhörern angenehm viel Raum lässt, ihre eigenen Gedanken schweifen zu lassen. Das Set enthält optionale Stimmen für Klavier und Vibraphon.

The Other Side (De l’autre coté) se compose de trois mouvements ininterrompus exprimant tout d’abord, le chagrin que l’on éprouve la perte d’un être cher mais aussi les moments heureux passés avec lui. Alors que le deuxième mouvement s’achève brutalement sur un fortissimo, vient ensuite un dernier mouvement instaurant une ambiance impressionniste magique : il évoque l’adieu, le passage vers une nouvelle vie. Une œuvre lente qui privilégiera vos moments de recueillement.

The Other Side è stata composta per dare l’addio a una persona cara. Oltre al tema malinconico del lutto in tonalità minore, arriva il suono dei bei ricordi in tonalità maggiore. Si confi da nel fatto che la persona riposiin pace. Un brano sentimentale e tranquillo, che lascia a musicisti e ascoltatori ampi spazi gradevoli per consentire ai propri pensieri di vagare. Il set comprende parti opzionali per pianoforte e vibrafono.

Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the St. Peters Wind Symphony from Brisbane, Australia. Ross Roy is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the Ross Roy as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics.The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of Tempo di Marcia. Thismovement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of passing through the classes up to the final examinations.Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding.We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the overture to the rest of one's life. The premiere of Ross Roy was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997.

Ross Roy is de naam van de monumentale villa in Brisbane (Australië) waar in 1945 het St. Peters Lutheran College is gesticht. In opdracht van het collegeorkest componeerde Jacob de Haan dit gevarieerde concertwerk vol metaforen. De structuur en discipline van de school horen we in de met toonherhaling gepaard gaande ritmische beweging in basregister en slagwerk. Het volgende, martiale thema staat symbool voor het doorlopen van de klassen. Een schertsende, humoristische versie van het hoofdthema ontbreekt niet: op school moet immers ook tijd zijn voor vrolijkheid. Het karakteristieke slotthema mondt uit in een feestelijke apotheose.

C’est pour l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de cet établissement que Jacob de Haan composa cette œuvre riche en métaphores. « J’ai tenté de décrire les valeurs de cette école. Ainsi, le thème initial se développe-t-il sur un motif rythmique imposant qui alterne entre les instruments graves et la batterie. Ce motif symbolise l’autorité et le cadre structuré de l’école. On retrouve ce thème plusieurs reprises et notamment sousune forme humoristique et espiègle : nous découvrons les bons côtés de l’école, la joie des élèves, les sentiments de fierté, d’amour et d’amitié. Autre élément thématique, une marche qui symbolise la progression des élèves dans leur cursus pour arriver leurs examens de fin d'étude. » En guise de conclusion, Jacob de Haan nous offre un thème grandiose qui s’élargit en apothéose.

This musical fantasy depicts the history of the Dutch fortified town of Elburg. The work begins with an atmospheric medieval picture of the Convent of St Agnes, the nunnery that was built in the first half of the 15th century. We hear the sound of the convent bells together with an upward motif, which will reappear later in the work. Next, the rest of Elburg is featured, including the fortress - from which the bells of the Sint-Nicolaaskerk (Saint Nicholas Church) are ringing. Then, cheerful sounds can be heard at the Vischpoort (Fish Gate), where a dancing group is performing a 16th century French folk dance (a branle des chevaux). We also hear old wagons rumbling over the town’scobble stones. Trade made this Hanseatic town a lively place. The repetitive upward motif first heard in the introduction now develops into a more distinct feature, reflecting the mercantile spirit of the town residents.Then follows the slow middle movement, in which the clock has been turned back to the time when Elburg was still lying on the Zuiderzee (which was a bay of the North Sea), and was struggling with floods. After the second St. Marcellus Flood (1362) and the water flood of 1367 it was decided that the town would be relocated. We now hear the theme of branle des chevaux in a minor key, followed by a death bell sounding in remembrance of the drowned citizens of the former town. Back in our own time, a slow, expressive theme in Baroque style mirrors Elburg’s tranquil places, such as the Feithenhof (Feithen Court) and the Weduwenhofje (Widow Court). Then the bustle returns with motifs from the introduction, followed by an attractive theme in which present-day Elburg is portrayed with its many tourists. Now, suddenly, there is an echo from the past, depicting the dramatic floods and wars that once plagued the town. This leads to the grand closing theme: branle des chevaux is heard for a final time from the perspective of the historic town centre.

Deze muzikale fantasie vertelt de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse vestingstad Elburg. Het werk begint met een middeleeuws sfeerbeeld vanuit het Agnietenklooster, het nonnenklooster dat in de eerste helft van de 15e eeuw werd gebouwd. We horen de kloosterklok samen met een opwaarts motief, dat ook later in het werk terugkomt. Vervolgens komt de rest van Elburg aan bod, inclusief de vesting - van waaruit de klokken van de Grote of Sint-Nicolaaskerk weergalmen. Dan klinken bij de Vischpoort de vrolijke geluiden van een dansgroep die daar een 16e-eeuwse Franse volksdans (branle des chevaux) uitvoert. Ook horen we oude karren over de kinderkopjes van de stad denderen. Dehandel maakt deze Hanzestad tot een levendige plaats. Het zich steeds herhalende opwaartse motief uit de inleiding krijgt hier een nadrukkelijker karakter en verbeeldt de handelsgeest van de stedelingen.Dan volgt het langzame middendeel, waarin de klok wordt teruggedraaid naar de tijd dat Elburg nog direct aan de Zuiderzee lag en te kampen had met overstromingen. Na de tweede Sint-Marcellusvloed (1362) en de watervloed van 1367 werd besloten dat de stad verplaatst zou worden. We horen het thema van de branle des chevaux in mineur, gevolgd door een doodsklok, die de verdronken inwoners van de voormalige stad herdenkt. Terug in onze eigen tijd verklankt een langzaam, expressief thema in barokke stijl de verstilde plekken in de stad, zoals het Feithenhof en het Weduwenhofje. Dan keert de levendigheid terug met motieven uit de inleiding, gevolgd door een aansprekend thema waarin het Elburg van nu met zijn vele toeristen doorklinkt. Plotseling is er dan nog even een echo uit het verleden: de dramatiek van de overstromingen en oorlogen die de stad ooit teisterden. Hieruit vloeit het grootse slotthema voort: de branle des chevaux is voor de laatste keer te horen vanuit het perspectief van de historische binnenstad.

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times

Het werk is opgedragen aan Jappie Dijkstra en het MUI (Muziekuitleen- en Informatiecentrum)te Arnhem,als waardering voor hun inspanningen met betrekking tot de ontwikkeling van het repertoire voor blaasorkesten.De componist schrijft: Het idee voor het werk kwam in mij op toen ik een artikel las over een takbinnen de Chinese filosofie waarvan denaam wordt afgekort tot Wu Xing* - waar geen exacte vertaling voor is, maar wat zoveel betekent als vijf elementen, vijf fasen of vijf stadia van verandering. Het gaat om eenwezenlijk onderdeel van alle componenten binnen hetChinese gedachtegoed, inclusief de wetenschap, filosofie, geneeskunst en astrologie. Simpel gezegd draait het om het creëren van diverse cyclische verbanden tussen vijf elementendie in ieders leven een rol spelen.Een voorbeeld: Aarde - Metaal - Water- Hout - Vuur - (Aarde) enz. In deze cyclus bevat aarde metaal, metaal verandert in vloeistof (water) door verhitting, water helpt bomen te groeien, houtdat brandt creëert vuur, en vuur produceert as (aarde). Zo blijft de cyclus voortgaan. Zelf wasik vooral ge nteresseerd in de cyclus van emoties: Meditatie - Verdriet - Angst - Boosheid - Vreugde - (Meditatie) enz. De gedachte aandit cyclische principe leverde een reis door een muzikale wereld van emoties op. Five States of Changebestaat uit vijf delen die betrekking hebben op de emotionele cyclus. Ik heb geprobeerd de muziek op natuurlijke wijzete laten ontstaan, met zo weinig mogelijk herhalingen. Elk deel vloeit voort uit de muzikale elementen uit het slot van hetvoorgaande deel. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk.

Five States of Change wurde von Kunstfactor für die vierte Abteilung der Holländischen Nationalen Brass-Band-Meisterschaft (NBK) 2011 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Widmung gilt Jappie Dijkstra und dem Musik-Informationszentrum (MUI) in Arnhem(Holland), in Anerkennung derer außerordentlichen Bemühungen um die Entwicklung des Blasorchester-Repertoires. Der Komponist über sein Werk: Die Idee zu diesem Stück kam mir beim Lesen eines Artikels über eine Richtung derchinesischen Philosophie, die abgekürzt Wu Xing* heißt, was nicht wörtlich übersetzt werden kann, aber so viel wie fünf Elemente, fünf Phasen oder fünf Stadien der Verwandlung bedeutet. DiesesPrinzip nimmt eine zentrale Position im gesamten chinesischen Gedankengut ein, sei es in der Wissenschaft, Medizin oder Astrologie. Einfach ausgedrückt, werden damit in allen Lebensbereichen verschiedene zyklische Beziehungen zwischenfünf Elementen hergestellt.Zum Beispiel: Erde - Metall - Wasser - Holz - Feuer - (Erde) - usw. In diesem Zyklus enthält die Erde Metall, das sich bei Erhitzung verflüssigt (Wasser); Wasser lässt Bäume wachsen, deren Holz verbrennt (Feuer)und zu Asche wird (Erde), womit der Kreislauf von neuem beginnt.Mich interessierte besonders der Kreislauf von Gefühlen:Meditation - Trauer - Angst - Ärger - Freude - (Meditation) usw.Ich dachte mir, dass dieser Kreislauf eine wirkungsvolleemotionale Reise“ durch ein Musikstück darstellen könnte. Folglich besteht Five States of Change aus fünf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefühle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organischwachsen zu lassen mit möglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Five States of Change est une commande de l’institut Kunstfactor pour la 4e division des Championnats néerlandais de Brass Band en 2011. Cette œuvre est dédiée Jappie Dijkstra et au Music Information Centre (MUI) d’Arnhem, aux Pays-Bas, en hommage leur rôle exceptionnel dans le développement du répertoire pour Orchestre Vent.Le compositeur écrit : L’idée de cette composition m’est venue alors que je lisais un article sur un aspect de la philosophie chinoise, connu sous l’abréviation de Wu Xing*, qu’il est impossible de traduire littéralement mais qui peut signifier, par exemple, cinq éléments, cinq phases ou cinq états de changement. Toutechose dans l’univers est le fruit d’un cycle de création (ou d’engendrement) et de domination (ou contrôle). Ce concept est essentiel tous les éléments de la pensée chinoise, y compris les sciences, la philosophie, la médecine et l’astrologie et, en termes simples, il représente les multiples rapports cycliques qui existent entre cinq éléments liés l’univers et toute chose dans l’univers, donc l’homme.Évoquons le cycle de la création : Terre - Métal - Eau - Bois - Feu - (Terre) etc. La terre contient des minéraux, source de métal, le métal peut être fondu et se liquéfie, l’eau arrose et fait pousser les arbres, le bois br le et produit du feu, le feu produit des cendres, une sorte de terre, dans une dynamique cyclique perpétuelle.Parmi tous les cycles existants, celui des émotions éveilla particulièrement mon intérêt : Méditation - Chagrin - Peur - Colère - Joie - (Méditation) etc. et je me suis dit que ce principe cyclique pourrait être la source d’un puissant et émotionnel voyage musical. Five States of Change se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio” musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.
