These 30 Original Chorales and Warm-Ups have been designed to develop the most important aspects of band playing, by providing material that can be used at the start of a rehearsal to test balance, dynamics, tuning, flexibility and articulation. Band directors are encouraged to adapt them to address the specific needs and challenges of their ensembles. Dynamics and tempo indications are not given and should be chosen by the director as required. All the chorales are strictly four-part. Rikudim (Hebrew for “Dancesâ€) is a four-part dance suite based on Jewish music. By using eastern intervals and irregular time changes, the composer succeeds in creating a slightly melancholy but specifically Jewish flavoured piece. Die vierteilige Suite Rikudim (hebräisch für ’Tanzen‘) besteht aus von der jüdischen Musik inspirierten Tänzen. Durch den Gebrauch von orientalisch anmutenden Tonintervallen und unregelmäßigen Taktarten ist es dem Komponisten gelungen, in dieser Musik einerseits einen Hauch Melancholie, andererseits spezifisch jüdische Elemente miteinander zu verschmelzen. Die deutlich bestimmten Themen und die bisweilen sehr überraschenden und natürlichen Harmonien bewirken, dass diese stilisierten Volkstänze ihre Botschaft sehr direkt vermitteln.Rikudim (de l’hébreu rikud, “danseâ€) est une suite de quatre danses originales inspirées de la musique traditionnelle juive. L’utilisation d’une structure tonale orientale, l’introduction de mesures irrégulières et la richesse sonore de l’orchestration apportent cette œuvre une teinte mélancolique mais surtout une grande authenticité. Les thèmes très inspirés sont clairement différenciés. L’harmonisation quelquefois surprenante sans jamais être dénaturée confère ces quatre danses originales juives une grande richesse d’expression.

The Ukrainian Bell Carol is part of a large choral work entitled Shchedryk by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). It was first performed by students of Kiev University in December 1916. The tune is an adaptation of an old ‘shchedrivka’, a song traditionally sung on Ukrainian New Year’s Eve (January 13th) which hopes for good fortune in the year to come. In Shchedryk, Leontovych added his own the lyrics which concern the legend claiming that when Jesus was born, all the bells on earth started ringing in his honour.The tune has since been the inspiration of at least four different Christmas carols, but Philip Sparke has sourced the originalUkrainian melody to create this stirring arrangement. De Ukrainian Bell Carol is onderdeel van het grote koorwerk Shchedryk van de Oekra ense componist Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovych (1877-1921). De melodie is gebaseerd op een ‘shchedrivka’, een lied dat van oudsher werdgezongen op de Oekra ense oudejaarsavond (13 januari). In Shchedryk voegde Leontovych de tekst toe over de legende die vertelt dat bij de geboorte van Jezus alle klokken op aarde begonnen te luiden. Sindsdien is deze melodiede inspiratiebron geweest voor ten minste vier verschillende Christmas carols, waarvan Carol of the Bells de beroemdste is. La mélodie s’inspire d’un vieux chant traditionnel ukrainien (shchedrivka) chanté le Jour de l’An (célébré le 13 janvier, conformément au calendrier julien) dans l’espoir que l’année venir se présente sous de bons hospices. l’écriture de Shchedryk, Mykola Leontovich a choisi de changer les paroles. Il opte pour la légende selon laquelle, toutes les cloches des églises se sont mises carillonner joyeusement pour annoncer la naissance de Jésus. La mélodie du chant a inspiré au moins quatre noëlsdifférents. Carol of the Bells en est la version la plus célèbre. Elle a été adaptée en 1936 (texte et mélodie) par Peter J. Wilhousky (1902-1978) d’après la version originale de Mykola Leontovich. Philip Sparke s’est basé sur la mélodie du chant traditionnel ukrainien pour réaliser cet arrangement brillant et pétillant. Ukrainian Bell Carol costituisce una delle parti dell’opera corale Shchedryk del compositore ucraino Mykola Dmytrovich Leontovich (1877-1921). Il testo narra una leggenda secondo la quale le campane delle chiese si sono messe a suonare per annunciare la nascita di Gesù. Variations Paris, 1846 was composed specifically for the 25th anniversary of ‘Brass-Aux-Saxes’ in 2014, coincidentally the 150th anniversary of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone. As a result, Philip Sparke created this work to pay homage to Adolphe Sax. The work is a series of variations based on one original theme and gives the ‘fanfare orchestra’ a unique and rare setting you would usually only find in Belgium, the Netherlands and parts of Japan. Consequently, this shows all of the different aspects of the band through both colour and technique.Variations Paris, 1846 werd geschreven voor het 25-jarig bestaan van Fanfareorkest Brass-aux-Saxes uit het Belgische Westerlo in 2014, dat toevallig samenviel met het tweehonderdste geboortejaar van Adolphe Sax, de uitvinder van de saxofoon. Componist Philip Sparke schreef dit werk als hommage aan Sax. Het werk bestaat uit een reeks variaties op een originele koraalmelodie. Het is geschreven voor fanfare een ensemble dat in België en Nederland veel voorkomt, en hier en daar ook in Japan en laat alle verschillende aspecten van het orkest horen, zowel in klankkleur als techniek.
