In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge.
The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire, the county which lies north of London.

1. The Journey.
Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly, the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music.
In the course of the tour, which starts with an Allegro movement, we are shown the vitality, energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside.
Short themes, swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive ofpercussion instruments give expression to this image.
The first part is concluded by two 'Calmo' movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached.

2. Visit to Ely Cathedral.
The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely, which was built in 1109, has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site.
A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point.
The mystical atmosphere of the cathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread.

3. The Pub.
The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must.
These “public houses”, which may be open until the early hours of the morning, offer all kinds of entertainment.
Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively.

4. The Journey Back.
Time has flown: In other words, the moment of departure has come sooner than one would have wished.
In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner.
Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present.

The Netherlands have been an important trading nation for a long time partly as a result of their geographical situation.
One of the first multinationals in The Netherlands was the ‘Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie’ (VOC).
The aim of the VOC was to send ships to Asia in order to buy pepper and spices, and to take over the Portuguese monopoly in this field. The Company was successful. An era of great prosperity resulted, in which the art of painting (Rembrandt van Rijn) as well as science (Constantijn Huygens) flourished alongside a thriving economy.

1. The Sails are set : There is a lot of hustle and bustle on the quay. The crew are preparing fordeparture. Goodbyes are said and once the sails have been hoisted the ship sets out to sea.

2. A Visit to the Rajah of Yogyakarta: After a voyage of many months the place of destination is reached. A visit to the Radja, the king of the area around Yokyakarta, follows. The dishes and beverages and the native culture in general are very pleasant after having been on a diet of ship’s biscuit and water for such a long time.

3. The Holds have been loaded: The holds have been loaded to the brim, and the voyage home can be begin!

4. Death sails along: Life at sea is rough. not seldom did a sailor die of a tropical disease or scurvy. After a memorial service, the Captain would speak the words ‘One, two, three, in God’s name ...’ and the body, wrapped in canvas, would be committed to the sea.

5. A joyful homecoming: After many months of hardship coming home is perhaps the best part of the entire voyage. The quay is filled with people eager to give the crew a warm welcome.

An unintended play on words on the title of Mozart's famous composition forms the basis of this solo piece. It was composed in 2004 by the Scottish composer, Bruce Fraser, and features a solo for flugel or cornet. It is not a very difficult piece for both the soloist and the band, but is that always necessary? A lovely, highly recommended intermezzo for your concert.

Een 'onbedoelde' woordspeling met een bekend werk van Mozart staat aan de basis van dit solowerkje. Het werk is in 2004 gecomponeerd door de Schotse componist Bruce Fraser en brengt de altsaxofoon als solo-instrument voor het voetlicht.Voor solist(e) en orkest niet erg moeilijk maar moet dat dan? The theme of this work is the history of the town of Grafenrheinfeld (Bavaria, Germany) in the twentieth century, a town that is now mainly associated with its nuclear plant. The German word for this is Kraftwerk, which can be divided into the words Kraft (power) and Werk (work). In this composition, it is a metaphor for the ?work? that can be realised through ?power? in a negative way (war) and in a positive way (reconstruction). Musically speaking, power also plays an important role in this work, as opposed to vulnerability, the sense of loss and the insecurity about the lost identity. Based on the text of Lied der Franke ?Kraftwerk? is a powerfully descriptive work thatwill add energy to any concert.

De geschiedenis van Grafenrheinfeld (Beieren, Duitsland) in de twintigste eeuw vormt het thema van dit werk. Deze plaats wordt nu voornamelijk geassocieerd met zijn kerncentrale. Het Duitse woord hiervoor is Kraftwerk, datje kunt onderverdelen in de woorden Kraft (kracht) en Werk (werk). In deze compositie is het dan ook een metafoor voor het ‘werk’ dat door ‘kracht’ wordt gerealiseerd, in negatieve zin (oorlog) en in positieve zin (wederopbouw). Krachtspeelt ook in muzikaal opzicht een belangrijke rol in dit werk, geplaatst tegenover kwetsbaarheid.

Der Titel Kraftwerk steht zunächst für ein Kraftwerk im wörtlichen Sinn, beschreibt aber zugleich die Bedeutung der einzelnen Begriffe Kraft und Werk im positiven und negativen Sinn. Krieg, Zerstörung, Verzweiflung und Trauer, aber andererseits auch Frieden, Hoffnung, Wiederaufbau, Zuversicht und Sorglosigkeit sind die Bilder und Gefühle, die Jacob de Haan in seiner Komposition heraufbeschwört. Ein kontrastreiches Werk, das bleibenden Eindruck hinterlässt!

Le terme Kraftwerk est constitué des mots Kraft (la puissance, la force) et Werk (centrale, travail, oeuvre). Jacob de Haan s’appuye sur la polysémie du mot Werk pour créer deux atmosphères musicales antagonistes : la puissance d’une centrale nucléaire qui peut se révéler négative pour l’homme et la puissance d’une oeuvre ou d’un travail constructif dans un environnement positif. Utopia is the name of a book written by the English author Thomas More and was published in 1516. The title is a word thought up by More himself, after the Greek language, meaning Nowhereland and leading to the invention of the words utopian scheme and utopian. Utopia pictured an ideal state on an island far from the inhabited world. This idea was the basis of the composition. It makes one think of Oregon in variety of themes and style. Utopia also exists of a combination of styles that breathe the atmosphere of film music. However, Utopia sounds less American. The slow and stirring middle part for example is closer to the European romanticism: the chord signals in the brasssection remind of Wagner's music.

Utopia is de naam waaronder een in 1516 door de Engelse schrijver Thomas More gepubliceerd boek bekend is geworden. Utopia is een door More zelf naar het Grieks gemaakt woord dat Nergensland betekent en de woorden utopie en utopismeheeft doen ontstaan. Qua variatie in thematiek en stijl doet het werk denken aan Oregon.Ook Utopia bestaat uit een combinatie van stijlen die de atmosfeer ademen van filmmuziek. Toch klinkt Utopia minder Amerikaans. Het langzame, meeslepende middendeel bijvoorbeeld komt dichter in de buurt van de Europese romantiek.de drieklanksignalen in het koper herinneren aan de muziek van Wagner.
