In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “CeremonialMarch”. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works, the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances” marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.

Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) came from an aristocratic family which lived near Novgorod.
When he appeared to be musically gifted as a child, his parents did not hesitate one moment to map out a more honourable profession for him he wasto make a career in the navy as a marine officer.
Rimsky-Korsakov, however, succeeded in secretly studying the cello next to his studies at the Naval Academy at St Petersburg. Through his cello teacher he came into contact with the composerBalakirev.
In this way he suddenly became a member of The Mighty Five (a group of Russian composers consisting of Balakirev, Moussorgsky, Cui, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov himself).
Rimsky-Korsakov turned out to be so talented that he evenbecame a teacher at the St Petersburg Conservatory.

‘Procession of the Nobles’ comes from the opera-ballet ‘Mlada’.
The opera has a remarkable history, for between 1868 and 1870 five different composers worked on this project.
The finalresult was never executed, however.
Twenty years later Rimsky-Korsakov started work on the opera once more and composed his own version of Mlada.The theme of the opera is a tragic love story that is set in the early Middle Ages in a realm on theBaltic Sea. In ‘Processsion of the Nobles’ all the princesses of the country gather for a grand feast on the occasion of the summer holidays.

Op die manier behoorde hij plots tot het ‘Machtige Hoopje’ (een groep Russische componisten bestaande uit: Balakirev, Moussorgsky, Cui, Borodin en Rimsky-Korsakov).
Rimsky-Korsakov bleek zoveel talent te hebben dat hij zelfsleraar aan het conservatorium werd.

‘Procession of the Nobles’ is afkomstig uit de ballet-opera ‘Mlada’. Deze opera heeft een merkwaardige geschiedenis.
Tussen 1868 en 1870 hebben vijf verschillende componisten aan dit project gewerkt.Het eindresultaat werd echter nooit uitgevoerd.
Twintig jaar later heeft Rimsky-Korsakov de draad weer opgepakt en zijn eigen versie van Mlada gemaakt.

Marching Blues was written in the blues and swing-jazz style of the great big bands. It is an ideal show march that can be used for encores, popular performances, family concerts and much more. It is unusual in that it features a 28 bar solo for tuba, tenor saxophone, or baritone saxophone. In his versionit seemed as if a typical Afro-American preacher ascended the pulpitand impassioned an enthusiastic congregation with his fiery plea.This exciting arrangement by Lorenzo Bocci has the same compellingtemperament and adds an energetic touch to any concert.

Het stevige, dynamische nummer Gospel John van de veelzijdige Amerikaanse componist, producer en muziekdocent Jeff Steinberg is vooral bekend in de uitvoering van de in 2006 overleden Maynard Ferguson. In zijn versie lijkthet alsof een typisch Afro-Amerikaanse predikant de kansel bestijgt en een enthousiaste gemeente in vervoering brengt met zijn vurige betoog.
