In 'Kinderfreuden' Enjott Schneider perfectly manages to set the five - partly absurdly funny - poems by Wilhelm Busch to music. The texts of 'Die Tute', 'Verfruht', 'Kurz und grob', 'Selbstgefallig' and 'Motto' virtually invite the composer to open his bag of tricks. These little pieces will certainly give every singer and his or her accompanist on the piano great pleasure.Schneider studied music and German studies and has been professor of music theory (meanwhile of film composition) in Munich since 1979. His extensive activities as composer, performer, music writer and lecturer have made him a versatile musician whose compositional oeuvre ranges from 'classic' avant-garde to pop music.

Gounod had no qualms about arranging well-known works by earlier masters after his own fashion. Thus in 1852 he added a melody with its own operatic climax to the famous arpeggios of the C-major Prelude BWV 846 from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. He first published instrumental versions of it under the title âMéditationâ, then tried fitting various texts to the melody until in 1859 he arrived at the definitive vocal version using the text of the Ave Maria. Already by the 1890s it was claimed that â[we] have heard this sweet melody innumerable times from the best lady singersâ, and its popularity has continued to the present day. Reason enough, then, for Henle Verlag to publish an Urtext edition of this worldwide hit, based on the sources and with appropriate critical commentary. In 1859, at the same time as the original edition for high voice, editions for middle and low voice, presumably commissioned by the publishers, were also issued. Following this model, the Henle Urtext edition of âAve Mariaâ is also offered in two transpositions for the lower register.

Syva Ilo (Profound Joy) composed by Olli Kortekangas pays respect to the Lied tradition, in which the relationship between the words and music is most carefully weighed up. Few modern works have enjoyed quite so much popularity as this song cycle. The four solo songs are settings of words by three Finnish poets. The work was commissioned by the Finnish Cultural Foundation and is dedicated to Mirjam Helin. It is available in three versions, for high, medium and low voice. 1. Maalari / The Painter (Aaro Hellaakoski), 2. Nuoruuden kaupungissa / In the City of Youth (Lassi Nummi), 3. Adagio (Kai Nieminen), 4. Illan tullen / When Evening Comes (Lassi Nummi).
